A Story of a Perfect Crime
By Acute Observer
The Asphalt Jungle
There is a new Police Commissioner in the City. He talks to reporters about conditions and the problems of the Police Department. They keep society from turning into a jungle (Chapter 1). At night a dumpy little middle-aged man arrived at a dark store front. “Joe Cool” sent him there. It is Riemenschneider and he has a plan. He wants to talk a deal with Emmerich (Chapter 2). Dix Handley is warned by Gus to lay low (Chapter 4). Doll visits Dix. Commissioner Hardy is worried about the disappearance of Riemenschneider (Chapter 5). Gus called Louis for a loan (Chapter 6). There is a meeting with Emmerich (it describes their characters and personalities). The others don’t know about Emmerich’s need for money (Chapter 7). The story continues. Riemenschneider heard a comment about Emmerich (Chapter 11). Hardy put pressure on the police to clear up the club robberies and find Riemenschneider (Chapter 12).
Emmerich has a problem in raising the money but plans a double-cross (Chapter 13). The police are looking for Dix (Chapter 15). The Doc is worried about Emmerich (Chapter 17). Chapter 20 describes the big city at night. The gang breaks into that jewelry store and drill the safe. They hear police sirens coming! But its’s for another place. Then a private policeman shows up, he is knocked cold but his pistol fired and wounded Louis. They meet Emmerich, but he doesn’t have the promised money and wants the loot. Brannom draws his pistol, Dix fires first (Chapter 21). They return to Cobby’s place. The police are very active, the Doc and Dix are given a place to hide. The police arrest many suspects, Gus too (Chapter 23). Hardy questions Emmerich about Brannom. He was collecting debts said Lon (Chapter 25). A write of habeas corpus freed Cully, who then left with his wife to visit Chicago (Chapter 29). Emmerich called a CPA to study his accounts (Chapter 30).
The Doc and Dix walk towards a new refuge. They are stopped in the dark by a cop, but Dix knocks him out. They find shelter at Doll’s flat (Chapter 31). The police identified Dix from letters found in his apartment (Chapter 32). A taxicab driver shows up to tell Hardy about his fare. The police will block the whole area. Sergeant Dietrich visited Cobby to question him about the Doc (Chapter 33). The Doc leaves, Dix gives money to Doll to buy a used car (Chapter 34). Louis is beyond the reach of the law (Chapter 35). The Doc found a cab drive to take him out of town, and they stop at a diner for hamburger and a beer (Chapter 36). The Doc watches a young girl dance and put nickels into a juke box.
Did the Doc stay too long? Two motorcycle cops stop him, one calls the Commissioner. All men have weaknesses and emotions, this prevents any plan from being perfect. Emmerich is with Angela, he thinks his problems began when he met her (Chapter 37). He will send her to Florida for a winter vacation, then sell the place where she lives. But the police arrive. They want the truth from Angela. They let Alonzo telephone his wife, then he thinks of an escape plan. Dix drives south with Doll to arrive at his old home (Chapter 38). But the farm was sold ten years ago! Dix’s mother lives in town with her son. Doll drove, Dix is weakening. They met Dix’s mother and brother (who wears a star). Dix stops talking. A long distance telephone call for Hardy says the case is wrapped up (Chapter 39).
This 1949 book is richer and more detailed than the movie, and better. W. R. Burnett wrote may best-selling novels that were adapted to movies (like ‘High Sierra’). No dates are mentioned but this seems to be in the 1930s. It shows how fate or reality confounds a well-planned operation. The reference to the “Five Corners” says this city is Cincinnati Ohio.
