Children are very observant. They can easily tell if something they see is unusual or if someone they meet looks different from them. Sometimes they regard this as something or someone they should avoid. But later on they find that differences can be an advantage in unexpected situations.

Squabbit is the name of a young squirrel who has a short and fluffy tail, unlike the others in school, who have long and bushy tails. Because of his bizarre-looking tail, he must find a way to overcome playground bullying in order to become accepted and to form friendships at school.

Adorable book!

Squabbit, the child of a squirrel and a rabbit, never did quite fit in. Finally, it was time for him to go to school where children, who are always very observant, noticed that he was different. They teased him and laughed at him and chose him last for the teams. Squabbit and his classmates all have to find a way to accept him for his differences.

My 5 year old son absolutely loved this book. It was quite adorable. The illustrations were simple, nothing fancy but my son loved those too. I was a little weirded out at first by a squirrel and a rabbit mating but... it is fiction so I guess it was okay. Once I got past that I really did like the story too. Not quite as much as my five year old but I still found it a fun story to teach my kids about the differences in other people and how this doesn't make them strange but able to do things that are different that we may not be able to do. Fun story with an important moral.

Interesting

I wasn't sure what kind of reaction we would have to this book, but I figured we'd give it a try. Squabbit is a hybrid squirrel and rabbit, who has qualities of each of his parents. However, the other kids at school don't quite understand his uniqueness at first.

My (almost) 5 year old found the book cute, and liked that a squirrel had a bunny tail. He also found it fun to say "squabbit" over and over! The illustrations are cute and child-like, as you can see from the cover art.

I have mixed feelings about how Squabbit has to "prove" himself, and I think that contradicts the moral of accepting others as they are. However, I make every effort to discuss such discrepancies in books with my children, and they understand that we don't make fun of others for being different.
