About the Author
Peter Martin worked at Battelle, Pacific Northwest Laboratory (BNW) for over 29 years where he currently holds an Emeritus Laboratory Fellow appointment, and specializes in developing thin film coatings for energy, biomedical, space and defense applications. He pioneered the use of reactive magnetron sputtering technology to fabricate novel and advanced optical coating materials and specializes in large area optical and thin film coating development. He has also led development of high performance large area ground-based and space-based laser mirrors for DOD applications.
Dr. Martin has written over 400 technical publications. He has won three R&D 100 Awards for his work in microfabrication and barrier coatings for flat panel displays, has two FLC awards, was awarded Battelle Technology of the Year (2003) for his work with the photolytic artificial lung, and voted Distinguished Inventor and PNNL 2005 Inventor of the Year. He has 26 US patents and numerous foreign and pending patents. He also teaches short courses on smart materials and energy materials and applications.

The best survey of surface engineering available

Introduction to Surface Engineering and Functionally Engineered Materials (Wiley-Scrivener) is a brilliant book!

Peter Martin takes a very nuanced and complex area and structures the material in an easy to understand and interesting way.

Dr. Martin begins with a brief overview of the various kinds of surfaces, e.g., tribology, optical, electrical, etc. and then goes on to describe the 12 most commonly used techniques for applying the surfacing materials.

He then spends a chapter on each of the surface functional areas with extensive notes on the properties available for each type of surface agent using the applicable surface application techniques.

One of the highlights of the book for me was the incredible bibliography.

I can imagine applications for this in the university classroom or for the practicing engineer (I'm in the latter camp).

If you only buy one book on surface engineering then this is the must buy book for you!

Excellent introductory textbook

While this book provides an excellent overview of surface engineering, it is more of a textbook than a resource for professionals, albeit a very good textbook. Its structured in a manner that makes it ideal for a course and covers a wide variety of topics without getting too in depth into any single area. That said, the book does provide a thorough and informative explanation on its own of the areas covered and does not require supplemental material. The book is highly technical without going completely overboard and compares favorably to many of the undergrad materials science textbooks I remember from school.

For product designers, engineers, scientists

This book is great for a wide audience. In addition to explaining the latest advances in surface material technology, it explains fundamental concepts such as surface friction and corrosion etc. Although some other reviewers said there is a lot of math, I don't think so. The occasional sprinkle of math is not too difficult to follow, it's about the level of a beginner to intermediate college physics course. The chemistry is quite interesting as well. This is a fun book to read even if you're just curious to get up-to-date on the wide variety of surface techniques.

About the Author
Gaston Leroux (1868–1927) was a French writer best known for his novel The Phantom of the Opera. Born in Paris, Leroux initially worked as a critic and court reporter for the newspapers L’�cho de Paris and Le Matin. In 1918 he formed a film company called the Soci�t� des Cin�romans. After quitting journalism to focus on writing fiction, Leroux went on to publish dozens of novels. He died at his home in Nice, France.

A fitting follow-up to "The Mystery of the Yellow Room".

If you enjoyed "The Mystery of the Yellow Room", you will probably enjoy "The Perfume of the Lady in Black". This novel was very well written by Gaston Leroux (who actually included himself as a character in the early pages of the book!). You must read "The Mystery of the Yellow Room" before attempting "The Perfume of the Lady in Black", as it is merely a continuation of the events from "Yellow Room". To say that Gaston Leroux has a few surprises in store for you with this book would be an understatement, as he gives new meanings to the events from the first book. For me to say anyting further would be unfair to a prospective reader. While "The Mystery of the Yellow Room" was a five star book without question, "The Perfume of the Lady in Black" falls just short of that lofty plateau. For those who enjoy a well-written mystery, you could scarcely do better than Gaston Leroux.

This villain won't stay dead

I've watched many a Hollywood movie with a villain who won't die. Gaston Leroux has created just such a human monster: Frederic Larson - thief, murderer, escape artist, and master of disguise.

Larson appeared first in The Mystery of the Yellow Room (1908), then in The Perfume of the Lady in Black (1909). Both are early examples of Golden Age detective fiction, and both are classic locked room mysteries - but they're hardly defined by these categories. Leroux's style is uniquely eccentric and flamboyant.

The Perfume of the Lady in Black is set in a fortified medieval castle on the Cote d'Azur. While sunshine and flowers are generally cheerful things, in this Gothic atmosphere the glaring sea, the blazing sunlight, and the overwhelming aroma of fiercely colorful blossoms take on sinister significance. With everyone wearing sunglasses, there's an uneasy sense of uncertain identities. And in truth, there may be a murderer in their midst...

A sense of dread and confusion hangs over the narrative - only intensified by the odd behavior of the hero - the supremely intelligent amateur detective and journalist Rouletabille. This teenage prodigy is a bundle of nerves and emotions. His feelings for his mother rival a character out of Proust (whose masterpiece was in the future). And his feelings for his father are frankly Oedipal (though Leroux had probably not read Freud).

I dare not even hint at the plot, because the tangled and tortured relationships among the main characters must remain a secret for you to discover. Suffice it to say that the book is a feast of crime, deception, love, passion, and psychological terror. With occasional flashes of humor.

And the description of the fragrance of the Lady in Black is unforgettable. I doubt if there's ever been a more sensuous description of a woman's scent.

I really liked this edition (Dedalus). There's an afterword instead of in a preface - no risk of spoilers! And the analysis of the book, the author, and his contribution to world literature is very well done.

Fantastic Sequel to The Mystery of the Yellow Room

This is a great mystery, but you need to read the book before it, "The Mystery of the Yellow Room" (also a great read). Both are a lot of fun, especially remembering that these were written over a hundred years ago. I can see why the author Gaston Leroux was influential to the likes of Agatha Christie and John Dickson Carr, among others.

Roman Diaz has been practicing origami for nearly 20 years. During this time he has become a well-known origami designer worldwide and has been invited as special guest and lecturer to origami conventions in Spain, France, Argentina, Italy, Germany, Colombia, Chile, Canada, Brazil, England, USA, and Japan. Fun kit. This is not just a book

Fun kit. This is not just a book. It is a boxed set that has an origami book, a chess board, and papers to fold the chess pieces.The book is lovely - nicely illustrated with detailed folding diagrams. The chess board is very nice - It unfolds into a board that is about 20 inches square.
There are many models of cats and dogs. They are folded separately and then glued onto a base to make the chessmen. The cat and dog models are very nice on their own, but they are a bit complex.
Box measures about 11 inches square. It open like a book. Inside is the stuff - the book, chessboard and papers. These items are encased in a plastic "clamshell" type package that is glued to the inside bottom of the box. It was very difficult to remove this from the box.
The box is nice too - very sturdy with thick sides with a magnetic closure. And it is perfect for holding the chess board and the chess pieces.

Cute cats and dogs!

I think this set will appeal to many people, including fans of chess, cats, dogs, and fans of origami. This set includes 100+ sheets of origami paper, printed with various designs (including photos of fur), along with a surprisingly substantial book with visual instructions that make it really easy. I loved how the dogs and cats are sitting in cute little positions, and each sits on its own chesspiece marked stand. The nice 2-sided chessboard is included. I’ve just gotten started with making my favorite cats and dogs first, and I’m really enjoying this set!

Fun for a rainy vacation week

I got this for a present for my daughter and husband. He loves chess and she loves animals. Making the pieces was a fun activity for both of them. Some of the animals were more challenging than others. The board was very think. This is a great long term project and display piece. I received this product at a reduced price for an honest review.

Love the book, but don't buy the Kindle version!!

This is an update to my original review... I originally purchased the Kindle version. I really liked the book a lot, even trying to read it on my Kindle Fire. In my original review I complained about the challenges of reading it on the Kindle and warned others not to purchase this version. The author was kind enough to reply to me, tell me how to get a refund (I'm new to the Kindle, didn't know I could do that!) and that he has asked for the Kindle version to be removed.

I purchased the Flexibound book and I love it! I wish it was a bit bigger, though that would likely increase the price of the book (love the price, so I'm stick with this size!). I have been writing on the pages, as intended, and I find this book to be very helpful. I am a mom of 16 month old twins and I often feel scatterbrained from all the chaos of raising twins, working 2 jobs, and keeping up with day-to-day life. I have forgotten about my own goals, desires, thoughts, etc. This book is helping me remember and allowing me to actually write down these goals/desires/thoughts. While you could do this without the book, the questions that this book asks really get you to think about your life and what you want, which is important to me. I'm really enjoying this process and I'm trying to write in this book every night. Not only do I plan to revisit this book every few years (it will be fun to look back at my answers), but I think it might be a great book for my daughters to look at one day.

This is a fun, helpful book that I will be recommending to others! I also really appreciate the responses I received from the author, as I've never had an author respond to me before providing assistance. It was greatly appreciated!

Boost your creativity and insight

This book came recommended by a dancer I know, Rachel Brice, in order to push through creative droughts and explore different parts of yourself... what do you really want to do, what do you really want to say.

The questions are probing. If you are honest, you should develop good insight to yourself and maybe even develop plans to pursue a new dream.

I also think it would be interesting to revisit some of the questions in 5-10 years to see how I've changed and grown. Would be a good gift to college graduates as they are learning about themselves and a place in the world...

Also a good gift for anyone kind of "stuck" in where they are and not sure about themselves or where to go.

This is a basic text for graduate and advanced undergraduate study in those areas of mathematical analysis that are of primary concern to the engineer and the physicist, most particularly analysis and design of finite processes that approximate the solution of an analytical problem. The work comprises seven chapters:
Chapter I (Algebraic Equations) deals with the search for roots of algebraic equations encountered in vibration and flutter problems and in those of static and dynamic stability. Useful computing techniques are discussed, in particular the Bernoulli method and its ramifications.
Chapter II (Matrices and Eigenvalue Problems) is devoted to a systematic development of the properties of matrices, especially in the context of industrial research.
Chapter III (Large-Scale Linear Systems) discusses the "spectroscopic method" of finding the real eigenvalues of large matrices and the corresponding method of solving large-scale linear equations as well as an additional treatment of a perturbation problem and other topics.
Chapter IV (Harmonic Analysis) deals primarily with the interpolation aspects of the Fourier series and its flexibility in representing empirically given equidistant data.
Chapter V (Data Analysis) deals with the problem of reduction of data and of obtaining the first and even second derivatives of an empirically given function — constantly encountered in tracking problems in curve-fitting problems. Two methods of smoothing are discussed: smoothing in the small and smoothing in the large.
Chapter VI (Quadrature Methods) surveys a variety of quadrature methods with particular emphasis on Gaussian quadrature and its use in solving boundary value problems and eignenvalue problems associated with ordinary differential equations.
Chapter VII (Power Expansions) discusses the theory of orthogonal function systems, in particular the "Chebyshev polynomials."

A Gem of an Applied Math Book

While this booked is dated because it was written for the days of mechanical calculators, it contains a great deal of very useful material. His discussion of Chebyeshev Polynomials one of the best I seen. His discussion on telescoping of power series is one of the few available. He gives great insight into a host of numerical methods. A very valuable work for the computer age as well.

Simply the best book on numerical analysis

My dissertation advisor introduced me to this book over thirty years ago. I have since read it in its entirety twice and it is still the first book I consult when confronted with a new mathematical problem.
Lanczos's understanding of applied mathematics is very deep and he has a rare way of explaining things clearly yet concisely. I find his description of linear systems in terms of multidimensional coordinate systems, both orthogonal and skewed, to be the best anywhere. Also, his understanding and explanation of harmonic analysis (he invented the FFT after all) is worth the price of the book by itself.
Buy it, read it (at least once) then see if really need any other book on applied mathematics.

An interesting if some what dated book

Applied Analysis, by Cornelius Lanczos is, in the author's words in the Preface, that branch of analysis devoted to the analysis of finite algorithms, or "workable mathematics". Today it would be called numerical analysis.

Written in 1956,foloowing assignments with then North american Aviation and the Boeing Airplane Company, the book is a compendium of compuational techniques for the solution of cubic, quartic and higher order algebraic equations, matrices and eigenvalue problems, large scale linear systems, harmonic analyis. An entire chapter of 65 pages is devoted to data analysis, the problems associates with processing large amounts of data, and some of the hidden dangers of straightforward(equidistant) interpolation. A chapter is devoted to quadrature methods, and the book concludes with a chapter on power expansions.

Most of the computational methods are devoted to hand calculation, or electro mechanical calculation. Today, algorithms developed specifically for high speed digital processors make most of these methods obsolete.

I bought the book because of an interest in Legendre polynomials, and their use in fitting to data. However, fascinating tidbits (at least to me) pop up unexpectedly. One tidbit that caught my eye was in the chapter on Data Analysis(Chapter V) in which the Sturm-Liouville equation suddenly appears, is solved by an application of Green's identity, and hence the result is a proof of the orthoganility of a class of equations (Legendre's being just one of several) in just two steps. Perhaps I missed something when I studied Series and Special Functions, but I've not seen this anywhere else.

A very pleasant characteristic of the book is the almost seamless movement back and forth between theory and computationl application. On the other hand, be prepared to spend time with a pencil and paper following not only the derivations and proofs, but the computational algorithms. For someone doing, or planning to do, a massive amount of number crunching of large collections of physical date, this is probably a good book to have.
