About the Author
Aleksandr Ivanovich Kuprin , (7 September [O.S. 26 August] 1870 in the village of Narovchat in the Penza Oblast – August 25, 1938 in Leningrad) was a Russian writer, pilot, explorer and adventurer who is perhaps best known for his story The Duel (1905). Other well-known works include Moloch (1896), Olesya (1898), Junior Captain Rybnikov (1906), Emerald (1907), and The Garnet Bracelet (1911) (which was made into a 1965 movie). Vladimir Nabokov styled him the Russian Kipling for his stories about pathetic adventure-seekers, who are often "neurotic and vulnerable."

Immensely Powerful

Alexander Kuprin dedicated this book to the motherhood and the youth. And even though it deals with unspeakable horrors of people living and acting worse than any beasts imaginable, it's at its heart about friendship, love, and devotion. These virtues, most often absent in the world of the riches, are found in what seems to be the deepest pit (yama) of social injustice.
I read this book in high school, lured in by Kuprin's other famous stories, such as "The Duel" (his first success, just as impressive as the later ones), "Gambrinus" or "The Bracelet of Garnets." Back then the emotional punch of "The Pit" pushed me to become a strong believer in women's rights, and helped me to form a solid idea of what a true man is as opposed to the dispeakable "men" portrayed by Kuprin's stinging prose.
Now, as an adult, I firmly believe that this book is a must read for any growing man, so that he learns how to be human in the highest sense of the word, as opposed to "respectable" and heartless "consumers" like so many showcased in this story.
NB: why do the words "a novel of prostitution" appear in the title? It's not in the original and absolutely unnecessary. What should appear instead is "a novel of real life".

How many well-known and not so well-known writers of the world tried to describe the life of the prostitute, the life in the bottomless pit? All of these writers tried to understand the mentality of the prostitute, the reasons to become one, and the pain of her existance. The pit... It describes it all. One word says it all. The deep hole and there is not exit, there is no way out. Every new day takes you deeper and deeper. Once you are in, you stay there. You stay there for life. And, when you are old (not really old but fairly used up), you are out and you have no means to survive. No one needs you and no one wants you any longer. You were better off in the pit.

Honest is the word

For some reason I had never even heard of Yama until recently. Just imagine my surprise upon picking this up and finding a spectacular classic. Kuprin does indeed tread that fine line between cheese and morality (both being boorish methods of storytelling) to create a truly human picture of Russian society. If you are interested in the glorification of vice and youthful indiscretions, please reread Burroughs, Miller or Selby. Likewise, if you are interested in moral high ground, stick to Tolstoy. Here, Kuprin deftly defies the clich�s to create not only a wonderful illustration of Russian life but a great story as well. This is amazing considering the time period in which it was written.

Laurence Endersen spent his childhood in Mallow, a town in the south of Ireland, and now lives with his family in Dublin. Pebbles of Perception is his first book. It is an exploration of the more important decisions in life. Inspired by the teachings of Charlie Munger, the book is an invitation to Be Curious, Build Character and to make Better Choices.

A good distillation of some of the most important works on thinking and living well

Lawrence Enderson has obviously read many books. His choice of books, or at least the ones which to which he refers to in his writing of Pebbles of Perception are good books. From them he draws their essential teachings which he then packages for dissemination to the reader. He made a comment early on in the book about how he hopes that certain people, Sarah, Lawrence and Louise, will read this book. Perhaps those are his grandchildren. The book is purportedly intended to teach them (and us) how to make better choices. Enderson tries to show how few good choices make all the difference in life.

The problem is, a lot of his advice is not advice, but rather statements on the way things are. He does not tell me what to do, or why to do it. Most of the time he just describes the state of affairs as described by the books to which he refers. For example he describes how our brains work and how cognitive biases can affect our decisions. While we can infer from some of those descriptions of states of affairs on how better to conduct ourselves so that we do not succumb to our cognitive biases, he could've done a better job in telling us specifically what steps to take to overcome those biases. I don't know if he knows. It may be that these are just his musings and thoughts which he hopes that the reader will implement on their own.

It's a short book and many of the topics are very important but are given a very superficial treatment. For example, he talks about marriage in about seven pages. While he does say that marriage is the most important decision any person will make in their lives, he does not give enough weight to the effects that a choice of a partner can make in one's life. Nor does he give us tools or steps or questions to ask in order to help make that decision.

The single biggest criticism that I have for the book is that the three parts on which the book is based do not get support from their contents. The author says that curiosity character and choice are intertwined. Curiosity and character make for better choices. However, the author never shows how curiosity itself makes for better choices, nor does he show how character makes for good choices. Finally in the third part, the author talks about choices. The choices that he talks about include who to marry, where to live, what job to take, weather to have children, and so on, all major life choices. However he does not show how curiosity and character provide for the resolution of these complex and important choices. Each choice is treated as a separate chapter and distinct from the others. It's like the author took some notes on each of the subject and bound his notes together into a book.

The author's original artwork aroused my curiosity. As another reviewer mentioned, it is cryptic, and makes the reader think: what is he getting at with this depiction? The bearded gentleman in the artwork is a depiction of the author which I found touching and intriguing. I admire the author's undertaking to compile his wisdom for his future generations. I think if this book is looked at more like a book carrying what the author has learned on through to future generations in his family, it is a good book.

The author has created a book which compiles the essential elements of many of the important writings of the last century. Specifically, the author has distilled these works into a selection of important life "bullet points": factors and choices that will have a large impact on a person's life. And a description of them and sometimes even a way to resolve them has been borrowed or influenced by the important writers of the author's life. For somebody who will not read all the books to which the author refers, this book provides a quick, and punchy way to access the knowledge of some of the better thinkers and writers of the last century.

It does a great job of making you look at situations we all ...

Common sense is not as common as you would think, but this book is full of the stuff. It does a great job of making you look at situations we all face at different stages of our lives thru a different lens. Why do incentives result in unexpected outcomes; how many people count you as a WARM friend; why experiences trump things every time. The answers are not in the book, it just helps you understand the questions. Great read !

this book offers a quick roundup of thinking and writing on making better choices. Nice references to make it a starting point for wider exploration. it could be improved if the author infuses some personal experiences around each chapter - otherwise it comes across as a cliff notes on each topic.

Overpriced textbook with little value.

This book is garbage. Its content is dated, the code samples are horrendously formatted and exemplify poor coding, and it is full of typos. Yes, a 4th edition book full of grammar and spelling errors.

To students. You can easily excel in the class without this waste of paper.

The book is about as thick as a novel and as dry as a dictionary. Yinong's class slides are pretty much word for word from his book. Don't bother buying this. You'll only need it for one tutorial in the beginning of the class.

A good overall book on distributed systems

While the author attempts to cover too much of everything in this book, I find it actually enjoyable to read as opposed to other past reviewers othis book. There are some fundamental and foundations that the reader should have about computer science in general as this is not an introductory book. This is an upper division and graduate level book with just enough background and theory for further study and research in SOC.

This book provides a guided tour in introducing optimal control theory from a practitioner’s point of view. As in the first edition, Ross takes the contrarian view that it is not necessary to prove Pontryagin’s Principle before using it. Using the same philosophy, the second edition expands the ideas over four chapters:

In Chapter 1, basic principles related to problem formulation via a structured approach are introduced:
What is a state variable?
What is a control variable?
What is state space? And so on.
In Chapter 2, Pontryagin’s Principle is introduced using intuitive ideas from everyday life: Like the process of “measuring” a sandwich and how it relates to costates. A vast number of illustrations are used to explain the concepts without going into the minutia of obscure mathematics. Mnemonics are introduced to help a beginner remember the collection of conditions that constitute Pontryagin’s Principle.
In Chapter 3, several examples are worked out in detail to illustrate a step-by-step process in applying Pontryagin’s Principle. Included in this example is Kalman’s linear-quadratic optimal control problem.
In Chapter 4, a large number of problems from applied mathematics to management science are solved to illustrate how Pontryagin’s Principle is used across the disciplines. Included in this chapter are test problems and solutions.

The style of the book is easygoing and engaging. The classical calculus of variations is an unnecessary prerequisite for understanding optimal control theory. Ross uses original references to weave an entertaining historical account of various events. Students, particularly beginners, will embark on a minimum-time trajectory to applying Pontryagin’s Principle.

About the Author
I. Michael Ross is a Professor and Program Director of Control and Optimization at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California. A Fellow of the American Astronautical Society, he received the 2010 AIAA Mechanics and Control of Flight Award for advancing pseudospectral optimal control theory and its flight implementations. His research has been featured in "How Stuff Works", SIAM News, IEEE Control Systems Magazine, IEEE Spectrum, Space Daily, and other news outlets. He authored DIDO, the world’s first general-purpose object-oriented software for optimal control. The software is used extensively across various industries to solve practical optimal control problems in astrodynamics, chemotherapy, climate control, data processing, launch vehicle design, missile guidance, quantum control, unmanned systems and much more. Ross has served on several AAS, AIAA, and NASA Technical Committees.

An engineering course on how to solve problems with optimal control using the Pontryagin's principle and the Dido software

This book is passionate introduction course to optimal control based on Pontryagin's principle.
The preface forewarns us, the author says something like "I show first, then explain after". And show he does! In fact, I believe the book deserves five stars for the showing. Prof. Ross takes a four front approach to educate us: lots of drawings and figures, a good amount math, a good amount of "simulation code" (for the Dido program), and a good amount of text. Anybody who has tried to write educational material knows that getting such a multi-view approach right is not easy. And here I need to say that that the book could do with a re-edit to bring everything together better. And therefore my "only" four start grading. Nevertheless, the content is good, especially when you take it as an engineering textbook and not a math book. This is book about understanding the principals and a tool, the difficulties and the solutions, and with such a focus it does very well. Also in a re-edit I would take out the overly self praise about the Dido program: let the student's learn if the tool is good!

Optimal control made easy

This book is an updated version of Ross’ first book. The second edition still has the same four chapters as the first, but each chapter is expanded with lots of details and figures. Ross’ style is easygoing and humorous. For example, what is a state variable? Any variable with a dot! This is the simplest explanation I’ve ever seen. He demystifies state-space representation, Lagrange multipliers, numerical methods etc. and makes you want to learn and read more. He also provides historical accounts that I found quite fascinating. The advanced topics are marked with dangerous bends. If you are a student like me, I say skip all these sections. Perhaps someone with a more advanced background can comment on his advanced sections.

He begins chapter 2 with his famous line, “You want proof? You can’t handle the proof!” I’m ok with this because I don’t understand the “real proof” anyway. But I must say that I understand Pontryagin’s Principle better now because Ross has a new take on costates. I didn’t know I was using costates in my daily life when I was counting calories in my sandwich! Trust me, this is a real example in this book!

The book contains lots of example problems and solutions. I followed the worked out examples but had difficulty with some of the study problems. There are many other problems in this book with solutions, which are quite good, but he doesn’t explain how he got them. One new feature of the second edition is that there are a lot of example problems with DIDO solutions. A few problems have solutions from other MATLAB solvers too. I tried solving a couple of these problems and didn’t quite get them exactly the way he has it in his book, so I don’t know what I’m doing wrong.

If you want a book with “theorems and proofs”, this book is NOT for you. If you simply want to understand optimal control, then there is no other book like this one. If you already understand optimal control but want a quick go-to guide, you do not need to buy this book; just download the “Pontryagin’s Principle” chapter for free from the Elissar Global website. There are a few obvious typos here and there but it didn’t bother me too much.
