Aspects of Psychologism is a penetrating look into fundamental philosophical questions of consciousness, perception, and the experience we have of our mental lives. Psychologism, in Tim Crane's formulation, presents the mind as a single subject-matter to be investigated not only empirically and conceptually but also phenomenologically: through the systematic examination of consciousness and thought from the subject's point of view.

How should we think about the mind? Analytical philosophy tends to address this question by examining the language we use to talk about our minds, and thus translates our knowledge of consciousness into knowledge of the concepts which this language embodies. Psychologism rejects this approach. The philosophy of mind, Crane contends, has become too narrow in its purely conceptual focus on the logical and linguistic formulas that structure thought. We cannot assume that the categories needed to understand the mind correspond absolutely with such semantic categories. Crane's claim is that intentionality--the "aboutness" or "directedness" of the mind--is essential to all mental phenomena. He criticizes materialist doctrines about consciousness and defends the position that perception can represent the world in a non-conceptual, non-propositional way, opening up philosophy to a more realistic account of the mind's nature.

This volume is a joy to read and provides a refreshing outlook on the topics that it covers. Crane masterfully sets up the dialectic context before introducing his own views. The big picture is never lost, and deep interconnections among apparently disparate theses are exposed. As a result, in addition to learning about Crane’s views, these essays provide the reader with a deeper and broader understanding of some of the important lines of thought and controversies in recent philosophy of mind. I have learned much from this book and highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in contemporary philosophy of mind and its recent history. Crediting the Subjective

Crane shows remarkable consistency of thought in this collection of essays. His intentionalist views have a depth, clarity and intuitive credibility that few other thinkers in the philosophy of mind can match. He refuses to be swayed by physicalist justifications found in Papineau and Tye, while leaving open the question of physicalism as a correct thesis. His crediting of subjective facts and his approval for notions of the given in perception deserves utmost respect, not only for accuracy but also for going against the grain of fashionable opinion. Highly recommended!

Have to say it though, there are a lot of typing mistakes in the text. Did it ever come across the desk of an editor?

About the Author
Loren Nikolai is the Ernst & Young Professor in the School of Accountancy at the University of Missouri-Columbia (MU). He received his B.A. and M.B.A. from St. Cloud State University and his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. Professor Nikolai has taught at the University of Wisconsin and at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Professor Nikolai has received numerous teaching awards. He is the recipient of the MU Student-Athlete Advisory Council 2004 Most Inspiring Professor Award, the University of Missouri System 1999 Presidential Award for Outstanding Teaching, the MU Alumni Association 1996 Faculty Award, the MU College of Business 1994 Accounting Professor of the Year Award, the Missouri Society of CPAs 1993 Outstanding Accounting Educator of the Year Award, the MU 1992 Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence, the St. Cloud State University 1990 Distinguished Alumni Award, and the Federation of Schools of Accountancy 1989 Faculty Award of Merit. He holds a CPA certificate in the state of Missouri and previously worked for the 3M Company. Professor Nikolai is the lead author of INTERMEDIATE ACCOUNTING and has also been an author on four other accounting textbooks. Professor Nikolai has published numerous articles professional journals, and has made numerous presentations around the country on curricular and pedagogical issues in accounting education and was advisor for Beta Alpha Psi for twenty years. Professor Nikolai is a member of the American Accounting Association, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), and the Missouri Society of CPAs (MSCPA). He has chaired and served on numerous committees of the AICPA, the MSCPA, and Federation of Schools of Accountancy (FSA), and the AAA. He is past president of the FSA and currently is serving on the Board of Directors of the MSCPA.

John D. Bazley, Ph.D., CPA, is the John J. Gilbert Professor in School of Accountancy of the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver, where he has received numerous teaching awards, including the University's Distinguished Teaching Award. Professor Bazley earned a B.A. from the University of Bristol in England and an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. He has taught at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and holds a CPA certificate in the state of Colorado. He has taught national professional development classes for a major CPA firm and was consultant for another CPA firm. Professor Bazley is the coauthor of INTERMEDIATE ACCOUNTING and has also been an author on three other accounting texts. Professor Bazley has published articles in professional journals, and is also a coauthor of a monograph on environmental accounting published by the National Association of Accountants. Professor Bazley is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Colorado Society of CPAs (CSCPA), and the American Accounting Association. He is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Educational Foundation of the CSCPA. He has recently appeared as an expert witness for the Securities and Exchange Commission and as a consultant for a defendant in a securities fraud case.

Dr. Jefferson P. Jones is an Associate Professor of Accounting in the School of Accountancy at Auburn University. He received his Bachelor's in Accounting and Master of Accountancy degrees from Auburn University and his Ph.D. from Florida State University. His research interests focus on financial accounting, specifically investigating the quality of reported accounting information, and accounting education. He has published articles in numerous journals, including Advances in Accounting, Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting, Issues in Accounting Education, International Journal of Forecasting, and The CPA Journal. Dr. Jones has received numerous teaching awards, including the Auburn University Beta Alpha Psi Outstanding Teaching Award (seven times); the Auburn University Outstanding Master of Accountancy Professor Teaching Award (five times); the Auburn University Outstanding Distance Master of Accountancy Teaching Award (two times); and the Auburn University College of Business McCartney Teaching Award. In addition, he has made numerous presentations around the country on research and pedagogical issues. He holds a CPA certificate in the state of Alabama (inactive) and is a member of the American Accounting Association, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), and the Alabama Society of CPAs (ASCPA). He has public accounting experience as an auditor for Deloitte and Touche. Dr. Jones is also a co-author of CORNERSTONES OF FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING. He is married, has two children, and enjoys playing golf and watching college football.

Authoritative but not an easy read

This is an authoritative text (it's on the recommended reading list for the CMA, for example). Unfortunately, the style of writing is not the clearest. Although I'm a straight-A student of accounting, I had to re-read way too many sentences.

Return this book after course is completed

This book was over done ? this book will confuse an accounting student. In fact, they recommend that you purchase a study guide to go along with this book (what does that tell you!!!). Along with a poor accounting lecture you are doomed to barely pass an accounting class with this book. The write up and description of general concepts ? extends to some far out, drawn out, and exacerbated lecture that may have been written by satanic worshipers or something like that. I bought the study guide to go along with this book after I did so poorly on my first exam and now I know why a few did well on their exam?s ? because they bought the study guide!!! The study guide should be used as the main study concept and leave this heavy weighted book on the shelf?

Chandra Medina begins by quoting various scriptures from the Holy Bible about the spiritual realm. Matthew 10:1, "He (Jesus) called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil spirits and to heal every disease and sickness." I sincerely believe, and the Word of God confirms it; that evil spirits and sickness go together. Many people treat only the sickness of the body and neglect the sickness of the spirit.
In the book, the author details things a parent must do to take back their children from the influence of the demonic. I agree with her steps that she outlines in her chapter, "Cleaning House." First, go throughout your home and remove all demonic influences that may be in books, music, video games, and other items. Second, pray over your home taking back what belongs to the Lord. Third, pray over the rooms and the individuals in the home in earnest and sincerity. Fourth, be grounded in the Word of God and teach the children to pray. Also, be involved in what the children watch and do inside the home. Really it takes a prayer of authority over the demonic and a true believer to accomplish it.
This is just an introduction to spiritual warfare, actually this short book never covers the Armor of God, found in Ephesians 6:10-18. I must emphasize that Chandra Medina states, that she became serious in her Christian faith and this changed everything for her. A lukewarm believer who is not committed to Christ is not a threat to the enemy. Spiritual warfare begins with a true, sold out, servant of Christ Jesus, who can battle the spiritual realm correctly, in the armor of God.
However, the reasons for the low rating are two-fold: I disagree with the books interpretation of the scripture from Ephesians 6:12. She interprets "Principalities are a sovereignty or ruler of a jurisdiction...Powers are influences over the thoughts and emotions of humans. Some of these are Offense, Lust, Greed, Bitterness,...Rulers of Darkness are the deceiving culprits of false teaching, false doctrines, religion & the occult.
Spiritual Wickedness...are the impish havoc-wreakers. They cause accidents, pre-mature death, suicide, delayed blessings, unseen obstacles, and hindrances to progress..."
I do not agree with these divisions because it is not in the Bible, it is mere speculation and not accurate. The writer needs to back up these points with accurate scriptures, for it to be stated as truth from the Word of God. One must be grounded in truth to fight a lie, for this you need to know the Bible.
My second negative, had to do with her description of Beyonc�, Jay-Z and Kanye West, She goes into great detail about the demonic influences of these individuals which is unnecessary. The book needs to remain focused on the truth and not glorify the demonic. These are secular artists who obviously do not love or serve Christ. We do not need to know who they are at all.

Even without the "Once upon a time," it's clear from the opening sentence of Jos� Saramago's mischievous and wise The Tale of the Unknown Island that we have entered a somewhat fractured fairy tale. Of course, it could be argued that all of his works are, in some form or another, fairy tales, from the whimsical, revisionist History of the Siege of Lisbon to the darker dystopia of Blindness. Originally published as a short story in Portugal, Unknown Island contains all of the elements Saramago is famous for--dry wit, a seemingly simple plot that works on many levels, and an idiosyncratic use of punctuation, among other things. It begins as a satire concerned with the absurdity of bureaucracy as supplicants arrive at the king's door for petitions while the king himself waits by the door for favors: Since the king spent all his time sitting at the door for favors (favors being offered to the king, you understand), whenever he heard someone knocking at the door for petitions, he would pretend not to hear, and only when the continuous pounding of the bronze doorknocker became not just deafening, but positively scandalous, disturbing the peace of the neighborhood (people would start muttering, What kind of king is he if he won't even answer the door), only then would he order the first secretary to go and find out what the supplicant wanted, since there seemed no way of silencing him. On this particular occasion, the man at the door asks for a boat so that he can search for an unknown island. When the king assures him that all the islands have already been discovered, he refuses to believe it, explaining that one must exist "simply because there can't possibly not be an unknown island." A palace cleaning woman overhears the conversation, and when the king finally grants his supplicant a boat, she leaves the royal residence via the door of decisions and follows the would-be explorer. Saramago then moves from satire to allegory as his two dreamers prepare for their voyage of discovery--and nearly miss the forest for the trees. The Tale of the Unknown Island packs more charm and meaning into 50 tiny pages than most novels accomplish at five times the length. This short, illustrated book begins as a fairy tale with a decidedly political inflection: an unnamed man waits by the king's door for petitions, a door the king neglects because he's occupied at the door for favors ("favors being offered to the king, you understand"). The man's tenacity happily coincides with the monarch's fear of a popular revolt, which results in the king begrudgingly granting the man a seaworthy boat with which he can sail to find "the unknown island." A philosophical discussion about whether such an island exists or is findable precedes the king's acquiescence, and the reader understands that the man is a dreamer, with bold imagination and will. The king's cleaning woman also intuits this, and she leaves the palace to join the man in his adventure. The two would-be explorers claim the boat, only to realize they have no provisions or crew. They elude despair with a celebratory meal and a burgeoning romance. Whether the vessel, newly christened The Unknown Island, ever finds its destination remains a mystery, but a crucial and tender suggestion persists: follow your dream and your dream will follow. More cynical readers may interpret the moral as "be careful what you wish for; you might get it." At the book's close, the man tosses in a dream marked with a desperate yearning for the cleaning woman and filled with images of lush flora and fauna thriving in the boat. Saramago tells his deceptively plain tale in simple prose studded with the dialogue of endearingly innocent characters; readers, dreamers and lovers will detect the psychological, romantic and social subtexts.

Inspiring tale of courage and love

This short fable is a wonderful metaphor for courage and seeking the impossible dream, for searching for the unknown islands in our lives even if we are certain we have discovered them all. The man in this simple, yet philisophical story inspires bold courage to dream inspite of obstacles, to remain determined in spite of skeptism and ultimately to find one true love. A very sweet ending. Truly an exceptional short read. I'll read it aloud to my family and friends over and over and like it more each time.

An excellent introduction to Saramago's work

This delightful tale is an excellent example of Saramago's fiction. The plot is deceptively simple (a man about to set for a trip to search for an unknown island), but what the characters say and think give depth to the tale. It is, indeed, a tale of a quest--a deep quest, not any quest--, and it can be summarized by what the man himself says at one point (I translate from the original Portuguese): "Liking something is possibly the best way of having it, having something is possibly the worst way of liking it." As "Todos os nomes", the tale is highly symbolic, particulary towards the end; however, in this case, the meanings of the symbols are more evident. A tale that can be read at many levels, I thoroughly recommend it to those already familiarized with Saramago and to those that are just being introduced to his wonderful world.

It Could Have Been and Should Have Been So Beautiful

Jose Saramago's book, The Tale of the Unknown Island is a little book that presents a little story. Both a love story and a fable, The Tale of the Unknown Island presents an elegant and exquisite premise that is disappointingly flawed in its execution.
The book begins beguilingly enough, when a man with a quest knocks at the door of a king and begs for a boat to make an expedition to an unknown island. The king is not immediately agreeable but our hero finds an unlikely ally in the king's cleaning woman and, after receiving the ship he has asked for, he and the woman join forces.
There is one problem. There are no unknown islands. All that exist have already been mapped and claimed by the king. When the harbormaster attempts to dissuade the man from his dream, and no one signs on board as crew members, the hero of this little tale finds that only the cleaning woman will help him pursue his seemingly impossible dream.
The island is discovered, but unfortunately, the journey taken is literally one of which the stuff of dreams are made. REM sleep and narcoleptic love play a big part in this story. It is here, in the land of dreams, where the story really falls apart and our suspension of disbelief grows harder and harder to suspend.
Nobel Prize winner, Jose Saramago, is the author of breathtakingly beautiful books such as Baltasar and Blimunda and The Gospel According to Jesus Christ, and works of stunning originality like Blindness, so I expected far more from The Tale of the Unknown Island. Perhaps these high expectations were a part of the problem.
The book is written in Saramago's signature style: a breathless, barely punctuated, almost stream-of-consciousness manner that is, as always, flawless, and that captures the innocence and high spirits of the protagonist perfectly. The metaphors created, however, are highly overstated and, at times, highly irritating.
Thematically, The Tale of the Unknown Island should have worked so beautifully. There is a lazy and wicked antagonist in the guise of the king, there is the pure and innocent hero, there is the classic quest necessary for the hero to prove himself and become whole and there is the requisite healing power of true love. The key to the ending is faith and the key to that faith is love.
With all of the required elements of fairy tales and fables, why, then did this book fail to hit the mark?
Fairy tales and fables are, by their very nature, simple little tales. The Tale of the Unknown Island is quite complex but told in a simplified manner. And, as we all know, "simplified" does not quite equal the beauty inherent in "simple." Saramago's abrupt switch from satire to allegory was jarring, to say the least, and definitely detracted from the book's could-have-been charms.
The gemlike playfulness and grace embodied in a tale such as The Princess Bride or The Last Unicorn is sorely lacking in The Tale of the Unknown Island.
The illustrated edition, however, is still well worth the time and money. Peter Sis' drawings, composed of clean lines and classical beauty have a fey air of antiquity about them and achieve all that the story set out to do but did not.
Saramago is a world class writer. That cannot be denied. The fact that The Tale of the Unknown Island failed to make the grade is a flaw as tiny and insignificant as is the book itself.
