Tony Jones (M.Div., Ph.D.) is a theologian, professor, and writer. Excellent

Tony Jones is an expert in youth ministry, postmodern youth ministry and this book shows why. Tony lectured in my class at seminary and it was the first lecture I heard in my first year that totally made sense. Tony knows the landscape has changed and will change dramatically, as fast as we can figure it out it will change.
So many books are stuck in formulas A + B = Great Youth Minstries, Tony goes beyond formulas and explains the landscape. Tony is a tremendous teacher, and yet very humble with the knowledge he has gained over years of youth ministry experience.
I recommend this book to followers of Christ both young and old, especially those who are trying to figure out what in the world is postmodernism.
One warning, don't come to this book for a guide of how to do youth ministry, Tony won't give it to you. What Tony will give you is the knowledge and the tools to figure out what to do in your area and with your students. This is a solid book.

Telling it like it is

Students crave authenticity even as technology seems to move them further away from each other. Authentic community can be acheived and the church can be the place and force that does this. Tony Jones is the father of postmodern youth ministry and he walks his talk. With all of the things youth workers compete with they do have something to offer this generation and that offering is an answer to a hunger for relevancy in a community that cares.
If you can't hire Tony Jones to be on your staff then at least buy this book and you get the next best thing.

A riviting, mind blowing read

The essential guide to youth ministry in the post-modern era from one of the world's experts on the topic. This book is a must for any person attempting to guide or counsel youth in todays culture. The youth of today are drastically different from the youth of even ten or twenty years ago, and to effectively reach out to youth today we need to adapt ouselves to meet them where they are at, and not expect them to come to where we are at.
That is a hard thing and it means our job, as youth pastors, is that much more difficult. In the post-modern, there can no longer be a cookie cutter approch to ministry. This diversity has to take place far beyond a regional setting, and even beyond a local setting: what works in Evergreen, Colorado might not work in Boulder or Littleton or Cherry Creek. But even more progressively, what works with one student may very easily not work at all with another.
In the post-modern arena, Tony explains, the Bible has to go beyond providing a general moral message to our students. The post-modern is very much about the individual and in minestering to post-modern youth, we need to be able to show each student how the message of Jesus affects them personally.
Our ministries, therefore, need to be based more on relationships and less on programs. In todays society, young adults are more busy then they have ever been before. At any given time they may have several different options with what they can do with there time. I highly doubt that any of us have the budget or talent in our ministries to compete with the entertainment our students could find elsewhere, so what we have to do is integrate our ministies to be a fun and safe place for students to come to, where at the same time they have contact with an adult that truely cares about them. It is our ability to care for and love on our students that differentiates us from other activities in school or the community. Only once a student knows that we care for them, and when they feel comfortable enough to come to us in their darkest times, with those things they would be too scared to even talk to their parents about... once a student trusts us that much in their life, then we have earned the right to minister Christ to them.
Students today are different. We can look at that one of two ways: we can either progressively and joyously accept and adapt to the change, or we can miss a potentially wonderful oppertunity. I think we all owe it to the kids in our ministry to pick the former of the two. Read this book. Some of the ideas Tony develops can seem complex and difficult to understand, I'll admit even for myself, but I think that we, being called to minister to God's children, need to understand kids as best as we can, so that they, in return, can better understand Him.

The book Jazzmen (1939) claimed New Orleans as the birthplace of jazz and introduced the legend of Buddy Bolden as the “First Man of Jazz.” Much of the information that the book relied on came from a highly controversial source: Bunk Johnson. He claimed to have played with Bolden and that together they had pioneered jazz.

Johnson made many recordings talking about and playing the music of the Bolden era. These recordings have been treated with skepticism because of doubts about Johnson’s credibility. Using oral histories, the Jazzmen interview notes, and unpublished archive material, this book confirms that Bunk Johnson did play with Bolden. This confirmation, in turn, has profound implications for Johnson’s recorded legacy in describing the music of the early years of New Orleans jazz.

New Orleans jazz was different from ragtime in a number of ways. It was a music that was collectively improvised, and it carried a new tonality―the tonality of the blues. How early jazz musicians improvised together and how the blues became a part of jazz has until now been a mystery. Part of the reason New Orleans jazz developed as it did is that all the prominent jazz pioneers, including Buddy Bolden, Bunk Johnson, Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Johnny Dodds, and Kid Ory, sang in barbershop (or barroom) quartets. This book describes in both historical and musical terms how the practices of quartet singing were converted to the instruments of a jazz band, and how this, in turn, produced collectively improvised, blues-inflected jazz, that unique sound of New Orleans.

Vic Hobson was awarded a Kluge Scholarship to the Library of Congress in 2007 and a Woest Fellowship to the Historic New Orleans Collection in 2009. As readers learn more about the protagonist's childhood, they better understand her prickly personality. This work pays homage to Stephen King's Misery but is definitely more thriller than horror. Following the bread crumbs, discerning readers will figure out the twist long before Livvy sees it coming, but there is still a lot of satisfaction in watching Livvy's dawning understanding. Almost non-stop action

I disliked every single character in this book. That’s not a bad thing. I did find more than one character to be clich�d. It’s been said before: This is a YA version of Misery, and Misery was one of the few Stephen King books I enjoyed. Many of the plot points were very predictable, but that’s to be expected in YA fiction. There was a surprise or two though, and those surprises were greatly appreciated.

The book is almost non-stop action, and there were no glaring story flaws. Despite predicting much of the book, I enjoyed reading the follow-through. The ending is excellent, and if the author wants to, there could easily be a sequel.

Fast Paced Read, Great for October!

The Detour is a fast paced read that is just perfect for October. I was captivated and entertained throughout but I definitely was hoping for a bit more.

Livvy’s character is not at all likable.

Even after learning more about her history, I really had a hard time feeling sympathetic for her. You can’t not root for someone to escape when being held hostage in a basement by apparent lunatics…but still…it’s always hard for me to 100% connect with a book if i can’t connect to the main character.

For all her faults, Livvy was spunky.

And I like spunky. I loved her internal dialogues and her half-hearted escape plans and attempts. Her captors were just odd enough to keep me worried for her and there were a few moments where I really had a hard time guessing where this was all going.

I had hoped though, that Bodeen would take this to a bit deeper place.

Maybe I was spoiled by The Compound. This could have been a lot darker and I would have been a lot more invested. We didn’t really get enough of the background or motivations driving any of the characters and that definitely could have added another whole level to The Detour.

I’ve seen a few other reviews mention twists…I didn’t really find The Detour twisty enough. There was the final revelation at the end which I almost but didn’t quite guess.

I loved how Bodeen dealt with the topic of plagiarism. With her nod to Stephen King’s Misery and her own main character addressing the issue of plagiarism and potential idea theft, Bodeen handily addressed a pretty weighty issue and still left me wondering where that line really should be drawn.

This wasn’t my favorite of Bodeen’s books but it was still a worthwhile read.

A fascinating psychological thriller, a very quick read

The Detour is a Misery-like thriller that never lets you stop questioning just what's going on. With a YA-centric premise, thriller fans are going to enjoy figuring out why Livvy has been kidnapped and how she'll get out.

I, personally, loved that Livvy is a young adult author, with the interesting addition that she's just barely out of high school, having reached meteoric success. But Livvy is far from likable. In the beginning, she's at times smug and acts as if she's entitled to the success she's enjoyed. It's off-putting, but she's got a big experience ahead of her. There's more to Livvy than meets the eye, and her background is more interesting than you'd expect. And her time in the basement uncovers a lot while also changing even more.

While I thought several of the twists were easy to anticipate, I still enjoyed reading how Livvy's experience worked out--how she'd deal with the time in the basement, whether she'd escape or be saved, the details as to why she was kidnapped, and the aftermath of the experience. Even without too much surprise, it's interesting to see.

The Detour is more psychological than action-packed, but it's fascinating and quite the quick read. The second half flies by as you find more questions and keep hoping your suppositions are correct.

This book is useless without those configs because that's how the labs are ...

I second the DO NOT BUY. Cisco provides the configuration files for the previous version (version 6) on the Cisco Press website, but not for the new version. Some of those config files might work for a couple of the labs in this version, but not all labs. This book is useless without those configs because that's how the labs are "broken" so that you can troubleshoot it. You put the base configs in and then load the lab configs (which are not provided) in order to break it. So far, their support is telling me that they do not provide the configs. Will update as soon as I hear back from them.

NOT FOR PEOPLE LOOKING TO PRACTICE FOR THE CCNP BY THEIR OWN

definitely is not what you would expect , at least in my case I was expecting a lab companion where I could get the equipment and try whatever was on the book , the thing is that is not that simple this book is (or it seems to be) designed for a class in a class room where the real instructions are given by the professor is not a book for self learners or people preparing them selves for the CCNP exam

Cisco press does not provide the necessary files to perform the the labs in this book unless you are a Certified Instructor. If you are trying to learn by yourself, you are screwed. This book without the configuration files is completely useless. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK UNLESS YOU KNOW SOMEONE THAT CAN SHARE WITH YOU THE CONFIG FILES!!!!

About the Author
Christopher E. Smith is Professor of Criminal Justice at Michigan State University (MSU). He earned degrees at Harvard University, the University of Bristol (England), the University of Tennessee, and the University of Connecticut. Trained as a lawyer and social scientist, he is the author of 25 books and more than 100 scholarly articles on law, courts, and criminal justice policy. He has been recognized as an outstanding teacher with MSU's "Teacher-Scholar Award" and "Alumni Association Outstanding Teaching Award." His other books with Cengage Learning/Wadsworth include CRIMINAL JUSTICE IN AMERICA, Eighth Edition (with George Cole and Christina DeJong), LAW AND CONTEMPORARY CORRECTIONS, CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS: MYTHS AND REALITIES, and CRIMINAL PROCEDURE.

Daniel M. Shea is Associate Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for Political Participation at Allegheny College. He is the author of several books on American politics, including TRANSFORMING DEMOCRACY: LEGISLATIVE CAMPAIGNS AND POLITICAL PARTIES (1995), CAMPAIGN MODE: THE STRATEGY TACTICS AND ART OF POLITICAL CAMPAIGN MANAGEMENT (1996 AND 2001), CAMPAIGN MODE: STRATEGY AND LEADERSHIP IN CONGRESSIONAL ELECTIONS (with Michael John Burton, 2002).
