I like this book! It doesn't really go in- depth on the covered diseases, but the information it has is still quite useful. If you are just wondering about diseases from a layman's point of view, then this book is helpful. I doubt it would help much if you were needing very in- depth information, though (such as for medical personnel...)

"Mommy, how could he have shot himself?"

Wasn't ready to explain the shooting of oneself to my six year old, but I was reading this book aloud and didnt catch myself in time when it got to the part about Van Gogh SHOOTING HIMSELF. It may be true and all, but I wish they could have said it in a different way in this very short book. I actually ended up explaining mental illness and suicide because of this book. I guess it was bound to come up at some point, but be warned it is in this book for kids. Otherwise, cute book, very thin, small pics, but clever enough.

I would give this 10 stars if I could. You would be doing yourself and your children a favor by purchasing this! I learned more than what I thought I knew, and my 8 year old ate it up. I love that this book can connect with adults and children alike. A must buy for anyone wanting to expand their children's knowledge of an incredible painter!

Gogh for it!

I wanted something to spark my 6YO son's interest in art. This book sure did. He asked me to read it to him a 2nd time right on the spot. He also spotted a Van Gogh print that I brought home. This is a fine series. I also got the Degas which wasn't quite as interesting but he still liked it. I just ordered Picasso and a few others. Get the Van Gogh and if your child loves it, try some of the others. (I also liked that this mentioned Van Gogh was very depressed once at loving a woman who didn't love him back.)

About the Author

Michael Sullivan, III is a full-time professor of mathematics at Joliet Jr. College. His training is in mathematics, statistics, and economics and he has more than 18 years experience as an instructor. His publications with Pearson cover developmental math, precalculus, and introductory statistics. Most recently, Mike has been highly involved in Course Redesign at Joliet Junior College. His experience in course redesign and writing texts for the college-level math and statistics courses gives him a unique insight into where students are headed after the developmental math track, and what they need to do to be successful. Mike is the father of three children and an avid golfer.

Katherine Struve is a full-time instructor with Columbus State Community College and has more than 30 years experience in the classroom. She is in tune with the challenges of teaching mathematics at a large, urban community college. She has served as the Lead Instructor of Developmental Mathematics and has been involved in the recent course redesign effort at Columbus State.

Janet Mazzarella is a full-time instructor at Southwestern College and has more than 18 years experience teaching a wide range of courses from arithmetic through calculus. She helped develop the self-paced developmental math program and spent two years serving as its director. Get MyMathLab if you can.

I used MyMathLab as a supplement to this book. However, If you get access to MyMathlab with your instructor you won't have to purchase the book because it's already in the mymathlab website. It was invaluable using MyMathlab because it shows you step by step how to do confusing problems. You get an endless amt of example problems and there's a helpful "Help me Solve this" in the tutorials. This is a very thick book that is used for two classes: Elementary and Int.Med. Algebra.

Used this book for a college course. It's okay because each chapter have a good layout of understanding the formulas. Con, it does not explain everything you need to know for the math course. I had to also buy the online account in order to learn half of the missing work from the book. And I hate the fact that we still have to carried heavy textbook to class. I preferred the online account.

It's The Book I Refer People To When They Won't Stop Asking Me Business Questions

I met Ebong when he was looking for entrepreneurs to interview for this book. Months later, when I read the finished product, I was sincerely blown away. Where most small business authors are extremely vague and offer obtuse instruction, Ebong gives you the detailed points. He has a way of giving you the exact information that one needs in order to seriously begin the entrepreneurial process. I specifically love that how he Skips the flowery jargon and gives you the kick in the pants that you need in order to move forward.

As a business owner, I am constantly receiving a barrage of requests for coaching and advice. Now that Ebong's book is out, I just give them a copy (I bought a bunch). It saves me time and gives them exactly what they need.

Start Your Summer Reading with Start Me Up

my interest in Ebong's book was part personal and part professional. i have written very few reviews on here but "Start Me Up" deserves a word of mouth endorsement (and this is an unpaid endorsement). i will cut to the chase as Ebong often does in his book. And in fact, that is one of the virtues - this is an easy read; he doesn't over-reach or try to talk over the reader. what's most impressive is that you do not need to be an accountant or economist or have a finance degree or even own your own business to follow along.

The substance of the book can be easily applied to those outside of those sectors and even in your life outside of business. Ebong's upbeat, optimistic personality comes through loud and clear, making more enjoyable than most so-called business books. I highly recommend.

This book gave me a better understanding of what I needed to do to get started without spending a boat load of money! As an entrepreneur myself, starting your own business (especially for the first time!) can be nerve racking but this book makes it really easy to understand everything and relieves a lot of stress.

In this edition we have given more attention to the interrelationships among genres. Though techniques of character development or dialogue may appear irrelevant to writing poetry or nonfiction, they are not. Nor are the techniques of sound patterns beside the point when one comes to write a play or a story. As we tell students in our workshops, what makes writing both fascinating and difficult is the fact that everything counts.

Almost everywhere, we have added and replaced examples, expanded sections, deleted some material and added other material. We have tried to make the book more readable, and we have added tools like the "scam sheet" and "Proofreading Check List" in Chapter 16. Chapter 2 has new material on the journal as a literary form. Chapter 4 includes an enhanced discussion of style. Chapter 5 attends more fully to electronic research. We have added new stories to Chapter 12 as well as a creative nonfiction essay that is not a memoir. In Chapter 15, two ten-minute plays have replaced Trifles because we felt shorter plays would be more helpful models for beginning writers. We have deleted and added exercises. In short, we have tried to do what a revision ought to do.

If you are coming to The Creative Writer's Handbook for the first time, you may be overwhelmed by both the amount of detail and the number of questions we ask you to consider as well as the sizeable number of exercises. Don't be. Our idea was to provide you with a smorgasbord from which to choose what tempts your palate.

I basically agree with Mr. Samuelson: far too much advice.

Though the text has some good discussion of the writing process and useful exercises, the authors tend to set down at times questionable "rules" and much too much advice. The price is also out of line for most students in public universities and colleges, especially adult education students who want to write as a means of personal enrichment--and it is the latter type of student rather than the next Hemingway or Frost who is most likely to register for a creative writing courrse.

Helpful but full of typos

The other people reviewing this should have kept in mind that this book was intended to introduce novices to the basic concepts of creative writing. I did not feel it was condescending or distracting. I thought it was helpful and thorough as well as specific. Not meant for the literary types who've convinced themselves that they are "writers" and therefore above the practical advice this book offers. It was used as a text book for a class I took: "Intro to Creative Writing." I found it very helpful and useful. I learned a lot!

Caution: This edition is filled with typos.

There are already dozens of creative writing "how to" books on the market...Why make a student spend this much for a book that's overloaded and at times condescending? Too much advice can intimidate a student; far more useful are exercises and suggestions from practicing writers.

Just the beginning

That's all this is, just the beginning. Truthfully I would have liked a little bit more background. Was kinda like picking up book and starting from 4th chapter BUT .... What I did read was very good, definitely caught my attention. Will be getting next one for sure. I absolutely need to know what comes next!!!

DELIVERS an awesome story and steamy romance!

This author's short stories have quickly become my guilty pleasure, but THIS one I loved! The story/characters are so good and I can tell it's only going to get *better*... I can't wait for the second episode. I totally recommend this author and her work!!!
