Great Kindle First selection... informative and entertaining

Rarely do I see a non-fiction book as a Kindle First selection, even more rarely is it one that actually looks interesting to me. I usually go for the Mystery/Suspense/Thrillers but I switched it up this month. Everyone loves a good, thought-provoking quote, I'm sure I'm not the only one who has filled notebooks with some of their favorites. Between quotes and lyrics I must have filled up dozens of composition books in my youth. I found some cleaning recently and it's really revealing to go back and read what spoke to you in years past. This book delves into many well known quotes from the past and explores what they mean, how they've been misinterpreted or wrongly attributed and I learned a lot I never knew. Bonus points to the author for mentioning one of my favorite singers, POE, in the first few pages... completely irrelevant to this review but check her out too. Anyway, I recommend this as a Kindle First selection for sure and if you're reading this after it's no longer a free selection I would recommend clicking the cover above and reading the first few pages for free. That alone is enough to tell you whether you will find this book as interesting as I did.

I lost interest

Like a few other reviewers, I was very interested in the description of this book. Unfortunately, although the author seems to have done a ton of research in an attempt to get to the root of the sayings, the book is written in a dry style. I read several of the quotations, but quickly lost interest. I believe I would appreciated it more if I had been looking for a reference book. I am not sure about recommending it, because it would all depend upon the reader's intentions. If it is just to enjoy a light read about familiar quotations, some of which aren't all that familiar, I would say give it a pass. If you are using this work as a reference to check your sources and accuracy, then it would be a better fit.

Tried to like it

The obscure references got tedious quickly. I generally like learning obscure facts that I can use to irritate people, but this was like the author was doing that to me. Handy to settle arguments, not a book to sit down and just read.

Wavelet theory originated from research activities in many areas of science and engineering. As a result, it finds applications in a wide range of practical problems. Wavelet techniques are specifically suited for nonstationary signals for which classic Fourier methods are ineffective. Developments over the last decade have led to many new wavelet applications such as image compression, turbulence, human vision, radar, and earthquake prediction.

Based on courses taught by the authors at Texas A&M University as well as related conferences, Fundamentals of Wavelets is a textbook offering an up-to-date engineering approach to wavelet theory. It balances a discussion of wavelet theory and algorithms with its far-ranging practical applications in signal processing, image processing, geophysical applications, electromagnetic wave scattering, and boundary value problems.

About the Author

Jaideva C. Goswami, PhD, is an Engineering Advisor at Schlumberger in Sugarland, Texas. He is also a former professor of Electronics and Communication Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. Dr. Goswami has taught several short courses on wavelets and contributed to the Wiley Encyclopedia of Electrical and Electronics Engineering as well as Wiley Encyclopedia of RF and Microwave Engineering. He has many research papers and patents to his credit, and is a Fellow of IEEE.

Andrew K. Chan, PhD, is on the faculty of Texas A&M University and is the coauthor of Wavelets in a Box and Wavelet Toolware. He is a Life Fellow of IEEE.

Surely a good fundamental book on the subjet

I have been studying in this field for over five years now, and I find the book very comprehensive and fundamental. Compared to most of the popular books on Wavelet analysis, this book touches the subject from its root, and answering some basic questions like what is a wavelet, what is its origin, and how is it is useful for performing Time Scale signal analysis. The best part that I find is that the book perfectly balances a mathematician perspective of the subject matter with that of an Engineer's viewpoint. The reader will find lots of examples, MATLAB codes, illustration and exercises, which are hard to find in other books. The authors have presented the material with a sound theoretical foundation with lots of clearly presented definitions and theorems. The book also introduces a wide range of applications in the field of Signal and Image analysis, data compression, Seismic analysis, etc.

This book has been carefully crafted as opposed to one of those collections of journal articles that just fills in concepts, without explaining them clearly. I would strongly suggest this book for the beginners as well as intermediate level students.

Good idea; too bad about the errors

The book is in general a good idea but has a fatal flaw - it has many math errors. It looks as if the authors took their lectures on signal theory and shoved them into a wavelet context, without stopping to consider what needs changing. It seems every two pages or so is a significant error. This would be ok *if* there were a published errata, but I have found none via google. What good is a book full of errors?

I have a copy of this book, and I enjoyed reading it. I think, the material is given in a very clear and instructive way: important things are explained in great detail, and the exercises are very useful. This book would be very good for self study, and also as an addition to any other textbook on this subject.

Excellent undergradate transport text

I was introduced to this text as a supplemental source of information for a Transport Phenomena course with the Bird, et al text as the primary textbook. Although the Bird text is still the forerunner in this subject in my opinion, it can be a difficult text in the undergraduate setting. I found the Brodkey and Hershey text to be packed with valuable explanations and graphs that complement the Bird text. I do believe this text would be very good in the role as a primary undergraduate transport text, but I expect to see the use of the Bird text continue because of its quality and longevity in the field. Personally, I still refer to the Brodkey and Hershey text first, before I delve back into the harder to read Bird text.

Not Impressed

I purchased this book because I was hopeing for a supplemental text to Transport Phenomena by Bird and Lightfoot. Perhaps it was because my teacher structured the class different than how this author felt the class should have been structured the information in this book didn't really apply to my transport 1 class. I will give it another chance while I am in transport 2 but I doubt that this will be the wealth of information that I was hopeing it to be. There are not many transport phenomena textbooks, and few of them are "undergrad friendly". This is one of them. The textbook was designed to provide an integrated treatment of the three areas of transport: momentum, heat, and mass. Brodkey and Hershey succeed in explaining a very complex topic using a simple language and generalized flux, and property variables that easily unify the transport equations. The idea behind is that same equations have same solutions. Not complex examples found in the textbook. Easy to read and to follow.

entertaining, but not enough.

This is a very well-intentioned but mediocrely-written book. While it was entertaining, and not nearly as painful to finish as some other books I have read, it was still a huge disappointment. The story is decent, but is written in a choppy style, jumping around with little bullets that are very unnecessary - simple transitionary sentences would suffice, but instead it comes off as having television show style scene changes. This book is filled with so many cheesy, sappy lines and narrations that I rolled my eyes so many times I thought they would fall out of my head. Just not realistic or intelligent enough for my tastes. If you have a few hours to kill with nothing better to do, then pick up this book, but if you are looking for a good book with substance, steer clear of this one!

This book was neat. It was sort of different then most of Lori Wick's books yet,it was typical of her books in the way it was written. The plot was neat,a little unrealistic in today's times but, it was rather romantic. One way it was neat was the fact that Charlie had such a bad life and didn't know what real love and care were but, Sean ,(pronounced Shawn),came by and gave her a real reason to live. Along with God's forgiveness,Sean's love and his wonderful family life, Charlie finds out what true love is all about.

I really liked this book - the author kept me guessing (though I thought I had it figured out and was right about parts). There were a few parts where I was worried what the next bit would bring (that it would be a deal breaker) but she never falls into any of those traps - overall, minus a very small number of jumps in time where it took me a sentence or two to catch up, it was clearly narrated and edited. I think my biggest beef could be that the climax was, for me, not as suspenseful or engaging as I hoped. However, I still liked the book and think it's very solid. And it was engaging, it just didn't ramp up like I hoped for towards the very end. Still, satisfying book with a satisfying conclusion. I'm looking forward to Fichter's next book in my queue!

A Compelling Novel with Red and Her Wolf

I really, really enjoyed this Riding Hood retelling. I thought it was fresh, compelling, and well-written while still utilizing the fairy tale. Of course, given the nature of Riding Hood retellings, most have Red and the Wolf get together (which is actually quite interesting, when you stop to think about it. Of all things, we choose the wolf.) But I think the plot had as many twists as it really could. And while I anticipated a happy ending, I wasn't certain of it, which is a particular strength. And a big part of it was what would constitute the happy ending--just them getting together, or them actually achieving their goal?

I'd say the mood is predominantly dark, but also suspenseful with enough hopeful to get you through it without wanting to break down. Liesel goes through a lot of awful things (Worst Father of the Year award goes to...) but comes out of it strong and determined. I wasn't always a fan of the way she treated the male lead (whose name escapes me at the moment) but I was rooting for them.

The pace is steady. There are slower, quieter moments between the big twists, so the pacing helps the novel in all the right ways. I was never bored, but I wasn't overwhelmed either. But I still stayed up all night to finish the book because it was just that good.

Most of the characters are developed, and the main characters are relatively complex. More could've been done, but what's there works. Some of the motivations and actions of the minor characters needs more development, but I was happy with how the people I cared about turned out.

Highly recommended, and a spectacular addition to the fairy tale retelling world!

as I love Beauty and the Beast

I was first introduced to Brittany Fichter's writing when I read "Before Beauty" and, as I love Beauty and the Beast, I fell in love with her writing and can't wait for more. I enjoyed reading Girl in the Red Hood, but not as much as Before Beauty, but I'm chalking that up to my overall feelings about Little Red Riding Hood and not the writing and the story itself since I still enjoyed reading the book. The format of the book made reading it a little difficult at times (I bought the hard copy) and the pacing slowed down a bit too much near the end, but the message in the story about finding peace with oneself is inspirational and I would (and have) recommend this book to as many people as I possibly can.

Captivating From Page One!

I was absorbed in Lauree's story from the beginning. I'm Scared and Doing it Anyway is written in an engaging and personal voice that transports the reader into a compelling narrative. It's one that illustrates how sometimes what seems like the worst thing can turn out to be a way of breaking open and moving closer to who you are meant to be.

Through Lauree's courage in the face of a brain tumor, and not one, but three brain surgeries, I found insights into what it means to forgive, to love, to let go and ultimately, to love oneself by loving others.

As we are led through the various obstacles and victories the author faces, the book speaks to the resiliency of not only the physical body, but of the ability to keep going in the face of surmounting challenges.

We all have our "white blobs." Some are bigger than others. Lauree's story exemplified for me that we always have the ability to let go and see what the blobs have to show us. If we do, we may find our lives changed for the better.

A Big Thank You Hug

This book took me to places of truth and beauty. I was inspired by what it reveals about the love that others unknowingly give and about one person's journey to recognize and accept that love - love that is given to the world as well as to the self and is returned in abundance.
Through sharing her journey Lauree Ostrofsky hopes that her readers will take on the “scared and doing it anyway” approach. Her words console what is broken in each of us. They wrap us in her embrace as she asks us to love ourselves even more for facing our failings and fears. Her story encourages us to give what we have - all of it, and to demand more for ourselves knowing we deserve it.
This book makes me hurt for the friend I didn't know struggled so deeply and hurt for my own fears. But it also makes me grateful that I have such a companion to lean on.

About the Author
A resident of Mattapoisett, Massachusetts, Allan Vaitses retired from full-time boatbuilding in the early 1980s after a 45-year career, including 30 years building custom and semicustom fiberglass boats. In his second career as a marine surveyor (a profession he still pursues), Vaitses has witnessed just about every flaw and form of damage or deterioration a fiberglass boat can suffer. In his third career as a writer, Vaitses has imparted his knowledge of boatbuilding, troubleshooting, and repair through such books as Lofting, Covering Wooden Boats With Fiberglass, Boatbuilding One-Off in Fiberglass, and What Shape Is She In? A Guide to the Surveying of Boats.

Also Valuable When Buying A Used Boat!

Of the many boatbuilding and repair manuals I have seen, I would consider this to be the best reference for fiberglass boat repair. The pictures on the dust-jacket alone indicate that a serious treatise is contained within. It would appear that no matter how bad it looks, there is no problem beyond the scope of the competent fiberglass repairman. (Caution - some of the color photos of repairs-in-progress between pages 118 and 119 are not for the faint-hearted!)
Mr. Vaitses has been at this for a long time and with experience in the world of wooden boats (all boats have wood in them somewhere) as well as having been a player in the fiberglass revolution, is able to offer a well-rounded perspective. His honest, no-nonsense approach to problem-solving is refreshing.
Besides the obvious background info and how-to descriptions, this book can be an invaluable asset when examining a used boat. Mr. Vaitses is currently working as a marine surveyor (a person who inspects and evaluates the condition of boats for prospective buyers). All used boats need some kind of work and the challenge then becomes evaluating the nature and scope of needed repairs, e.g. distinguishing structural and safety issues from cosmetics and determining whether one can affect the repairs oneself vs. how much it will cost to have someone else do it.
Studying this book allows one to communicate more effectively with the surveyor and to describe problems more accurately to repair facilities in order to estimate projected costs. We recently completed the evaluation and purchase of a 1974 36-foot fiberglass cruiser. I can honestly say that the knowledge and confidence I gained from this book made the entire process a good bit less nerve-racking than it might have been!

I have not used the book yet, but I looked it over, and it seems to be full of good information,,,, Later this year, I plan to build a hard top for two of my boats, and finish them with some sort of fiberglass matting and epoxy resin.. I hope these books make it as easy as it should be to get this part of the project done..
