The China Wave:Rise of a Civilizational State, by Weiwei Zhang

This is a best-seller in China and a geopolitical book for our times. As a leading thinker from China, Zhang Weiwei provides an original, comprehensive and engrossing study on the rise of China and its effective yet controversial model of development, and the book has become a centerpiece of an unfolding debate within China on the nature and future of the world's most populous nation and its possible global impact. China's rise, according to Zhang, is not the rise of an ordinary country, but the rise of a different type of country, a country sui generis, a civilizational state, a new model of development and a new political discourse which indeed questions many of the Western assumptions about democracy, good governance and human rights. The book is as analytical as it is provocative, and should be required reading for everyone concerned with the rise of China and its global implications.

Review
"One of the most popular books on sale in China at the moment is on the rise of a civilizational state, by Zhang Weiwei. Mr Zhang argues that China is unique as 'the world's only amalgam of an ancient civilization and a huge modern state', and is 'increasingly returning to its own roots for inspiration, and producing its own norms and standards."
-- The Economist: Nothing New under Heaven

"As China feels its own economic and political strength in the world, it is natural that its own intellectuals should want to explain China's progress theoretically, first to themselves, then to the world. Prof. Zhang's book has been well regarded within China, making a major contribution to the internal debate on China's future. By translating his book into English, Prof. Zhang adds to the world's understanding of China's development and what this means for the world. China's astonishing re-emergence on the global stage has thrown into confusion traditional western-dominated theories of modernization, in Prof. Zhang's own words, putting 'an end to the End of Civilization'."
-- George Yeo, Former Foreign Minister of Singapore

"The China Wave: Rise of a Civilizational State is the geopolitical book for our times. It frames the rise of China, which is the big story of the 21st Century, with a bold and novel theory that challenges conventional wisdom of national structure, democracy, and what constitutes good governance. At a time when American exceptionalism is on the wane, are we ready for Chinese exceptionalism on the rise? Zhang Weiwei, whose energetic vision resonates well among Chinese future leaders, makes a compelling case. His arguments and insights, as analytical and passionate as they are confrontational and controversial, should be required reading for everyone concerned about China. Ignore this book and you will not understand how China's leaders think."
Robert Lawrence Kuhn, Author, How China's Leaders Think

"The rise of China is the biggest story of our time and the best story-tellers of our time come from the West. This has led to a huge global paradox where the best story-tellers have failed to understand the biggest story of our time. This is why the world urgently needs good Chinese story-tellers to provide the Chinese perspective. Prof. Zhang has done the world a huge favor by coming out with this timely and interesting new perspective on the rise of China." --Kishore Mahbubani, Dean, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore, Author, The New Asian Hemisphere: The Irresistible Shift of Power to the East, One of the Top 100 Global Thinkers in 2010 & 2011 by Foreign Policy Magazine

"Few scholars from the mainland are as urbane, connected and savvy as Zhang Weiwei ... The book's central idea is that China is different from other nation states. There is some merit to this. Unlike the politically diffuse civilisations of Europe, the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent, China has managed to establish political unity over most of its territory." --South China Morning Post

"Mr Xi [Jinping] is also said to have read The China Wave by Zhang Weiwei, a professor at Fudan University in Shanghai and the Geneva School of Public Diplomacy and International Relations. That book offers a vigorous summary of the 'China model' theory, which holds that China can successfully meld authoritarian government with a capitalist-style economy. (Section titles include 'The China Model May Win Out' and 'Political Reform, the Chinese Way'). It depicts China's rise as the rise of a civilization - something bigger than a nation." --Didi Kirsten Tatlow, The New York Times: The Risks of Taking China's Helm

From the Inside Flap
This text on quantum mechanics begins by covering all the main topics of an introduction to the subject. It then concentrates on newer developments. In particular it continues with the perturbative solution of the Schr dinger equation for various potentials and thereafter with the introduction and evaluation of their path integral counterparts. Considerations of the large order behaviour of the perturbation expansions show that in most applications these are asymptotic expansions. The parallel consideration of path integrals requires the evaluation of these around periodic classical configurations, the fluctuation equations about which lead back to specific wave equations. The period of the classical configurations is related to temperature, and permits transitions to the thermal domain to be classified as phase transitions.

In this second edition of the text important applications and numerous examples have been added. In particular, the chapter on the Coulomb potential has been extended to include an introduction to chemical bonds, the chapter on periodic potentials has been supplemented by a section on the band theory of metals and semiconductors, and in the chapter on large order behavior a section has been added illustrating the success of converging factors in the evaluation of asymptotic expansions. Detailed calculations permit the reader to follow every step.

A Chinese explains China to the Chinese
By Sceptique500
The interest of this book lies in the fact that it was written originally for a Chinese audience - more or less it is Chinese talking to each other. What arguments are used, what self-images are evoked? I'd recommend it on such grounds. Of course, all self-analysis is necessarily self-affirmation, and the author resolutely avoids stepping outside the boundaries of the politically comfortable; don't expect excruciating self-flagellation. The book is easy to read, if somewhat repetitive. It is worth spending same time with, and keeping handy as a collection of (+/- ideological) statements of Chinese political wisdom.

The Chinese play "go," and the West plays chess. There is no point in arguing which game is more satisfactory, or useful. To each his preferred game - though the choice is telling of the underlying mentality. I'll gladly accept China's claim to its own strategic and culturally based development path as presented here by the author. Three cheers for the three "no" (pg. 89).

My comments take the author's arguments as starting points. I'll check them for consistency; I'll verify historical facts and assess the current dynasty on its own terms, as given by the author. The balance sheet is checkered, in my double-entry book (a Western invention).

The strong points first.

China's long-standing ability to deal with the inner diversity of its civilization is remarkable. There seems indeed to be a willingness to strive for inclusiveness. The current approach of experimenting, of allowing diversity to bloom, in order pragmatically to find the best way forward, is laudable. It is a Bayesian approach, rather than top-down planning, and is per definition inclusive of experience and people. In addition, to being reality-based; spreading the pilot experience across the nation is easiest when it is done by emulation, rather than top-down fiat.

The author seems to be in the right when he points out that China's development has not entailed aggression and overseas adventures (pg. 12 and numerous other places). The building of a nation-state need not go hand in hand with external aggressiveness (as in the West). This point might have been made even more strongly, for the West imputes China outward aggressiveness, which to my view is more a projection of its darker self. China "standing up" does not necessarily mean that it is spoiling for a fight.

I'd agree that China has been able to transform itself silently, even unobtrusively. The Yellow Emperor has been banished, and replaced by a collective leadership striving to become a meritocracy (some quip that it was a management-buyout). This was done without beheading sovereigns, or creating revolutionary upheavals. In a way, China has just traversed a period as transformative as the French Revolution, and no one seems to have noticed.

The involvement of the state (what the author calls "macro-regulation") so far has proven helpful, though some of the author's claims might be taken with a grain of salt. So far, the going was easy. Economic development was the way forward, and some of the longer-term consequences were yet to manifest themselves. Soon trade-offs will need to be made: does China want to continue being the world's "producer of last resort" and accept the ensuing pollution? It is remarkable that neither "environment" nor "pollution" appears in the index to this work.

The search for meritocracy is meritorious. Indeed, the Keju system is a Chinese invention (pg. 132). Indeed, a professionalized ruling class may be better for the country in the long run. The system have not proven to be unmitigated bliss: mandarins closed China's doors to the outside under the Ming (to spite the eunuchs). In the XIXth century, the Keju system's unwillingness to reform itself stifled "self-strengthening." Corruption was significant at all times among the Mandarins. The system is easily perverted: self-referential formalism replaces professionalism. Such flaws have not been banished: one wonders what Marxism and the study of Contradictions can still teach the budding meritocracy - unless one takes mastery of this curriculum as proxy for an IQ test.

There are major flaws in the author's discourse, which he glosses over.

The Dynasty came to power in 1949. Indeed, it lifted 400 million people out of poverty. Hurrah! But it also sent 80 million or so to utter misery and terrifying death. A whole generation of children was not born, simply because fertility plummeted due to hunger and stress. It is very difficult for me to accept glossing over this fact (as the author does), blandly asserting that the Dynasty actually emerged in 1978, and reiterating: "this time the Dynasty means to be humanistic and Confucian" and what else. I'm not arguing that the Dynasty has lost its mandate - this is not for me to decide. The least one can do, however (particularly when facing the citizenry who has lived through these periods) is to acknowledge the events, and not to go on about the good deeds of the Dynasty as if nothing had happened. That the author considers politically impossible this revisiting of the past, tells much about the real state of things in China today.

In this context, the author is uncritical, I would even say hagiographic, of Deng Xiaoping. [So is Deng's major Western biographer (Deng Xiaoping and the Transformation of China) who devotes 12 of his 700-page-biography to Deng's role in the Dynasty during the first 20 years.] Deng had much blood on his hands until 1969. It is the outstanding merit of Deng to have learned from the Dynasty's mistakes. He concluded that one should seek ideological truth, but closure from ideological struggles in economic development.

The other "missing reality" in this book is coercion. The historical picture the author presents of China's civilization does not even mention the pervasive and ever present co-responsibility system. It was the subtlest, pervasive, terrifying and thus most effective of "harmonizers." It was there at the beginning, and it is still in place, in strange ways. More generally, the repressive character of China's traditional society is utterly ignored. Yet much of China's history is one of mindless state repression - as reflected in popular literature celebrating the redressing of state-wrought wrongs (in the West, by comparison, the stories are about heroic feats against circumstances).

The author praises the way use and ownership of land has been separated, avoiding concentration of ownership into the hands of few. This is correct, as long as land use does not change (or intensify). Changes are the order of the day, however, and the profits arising when use changes are being denied to the historical user. When hutongs are razed to make room for high-risers, displaced dwellers only get nominal compensation for use-loss, or are simply resettled: profit from the new use goes to the well-connected. This issue is not going away, and could tear the country apart.

A final remark: the historical sketch of China as civilizational state - the stately progress of Chinese civilization united around an unwavering sense of self over 3000 or more years - seems to me (who has read a tiny bit on the subject) quite incomplete (and often wrong, at least according to current Western scholarship). Just one example: it seems to have escaped the author's attention that probably over half of China's dynasties were either semi-barbarian (beginning with Qin), or fully "barbarian," like the Liao, Yuan, and Qing (for 200 years Han Chinese men grimly wore the queue as overt sign of submission to the "foreign" Manchus). One is hard put to believe that conquest bestowed on these foreign dynasties the capacity to incarnate Chinese civilization in its march toward Confucian perfection.

I'm afraid, this rosy-tinted view of China's past won't do. Here, I'll challenge the author, in a friendly way. While many histories of China have been written, they are all by foreign scholars. Given the scholarly capacities of China today, I'm eagerly awaiting the publication there (to be translated into English at affordable rates), of a History of China that surpasses in scholarly rigor, depth, and detail, what is available at the moment. For people like me, who would like better to understand this civilization, this would be a great bonus. And it would be proof of China having made peace with itself.

This small, 176-page book by Zhang, a professor at Fudan University and one-time interpreter for Deng Xiaoping, addresses the most gripping debate in and about China today: Should the most populous nation and the second largest economy in the world follow the Western, particularly American, model of economy and governance, or follow its own model of development while assimilating the best from the world? Zhang favours the latter and in this book, he provides his analysis and reasoning as to why he thinks so.

Modest and careful, Zhang sees two sides to every major issue, and recognising that statistics can be deceptive, he acknowledges that there may not be a great deal to rejoice in being the second largest economy. He remembers the lessons of history - that China lost the Opium Wars when it was then the world's largest economy. He understands that the "rise of China" irks as many as it impresses. He is cautious in rejoicing in China's new status not because he belongs to the camp that views it as a false dawn, but because he prefers (like Deng Xiaoping) that China keeps a low profile to avoid "unnecessarily heavy international burdens".

He issues a gentle but firm reminder to those who would scoff at the "rise of China" that China was not just an ordinary country rising through the application of a Western model economy. The nature of China's rise, in his view, "is the rise of a civilizational state which has amalgamated the world's longest continuous civilization with the modern state." This was made possible with the establishment of the three structures - the upper structure (which includes government ministries and the central bank) established during the republican years 1911-1949; the lower structure, established by Mao Tze Tung through land reforms and the mobilization of the peasants; and the middle structure established through Deng Xiaoping's economic reforms and China's entry into the modern market.

Carefully navigating through the landmark developments in the country's economic history, and constantly reaffirming the nature of Chinese society, Zhang compares the parallel history not just of America and Europe, but also China's tinier neighbours in Asia. One of the strengths of China (and for that matter, it ought to be the strength of every nation) is the people. Noting that education is invaluable and had played a crucial role in China's rise, one can at once understand why America is heading the opposite direction. Thus, just as Deng Xiaoping's ride in Japan's bullet train in 1978 inspired Deng to modernize China, Barak Obama remarked after riding in China's longer, faster bullet train in 2010 that: "There is no reason why China should have the fastest trains".

Zhang holds the view that had China adopted the Western model it would have disintegrated like the USSR and Yugoslavia. He presents a different assessment of China than that often characterized in foreign press and publications, especially Western ones. Thus he states that "yet the reality is that most Chinese are fair-minded: if you have good performance in the past, and if you are still working earnestly for the people, they tend to understand you and give you room for improvement." This may not be the view typically accepted by the West, but the answer to the question whether Zhang is repeating Chinese propaganda or making an astute judgment lies in the earnest and humble tone of this fascinating book.

More importantly, Zhang identifies two groups of Asian countries that had tried the Western model and he gives his critical appraisal of the outcome. The first are countries like Philippines and Thailand which embraced the Western model too early - while they were still poor. The second group, like South Korea and Taiwan, adopted the Western model after they had reached a higher level of modernization. In all these cases, he noted three problems. First, society becomes more divided; secondly, corruption generally increased rather than decreased; and thirdly, the economy is negatively affected. [Zhang mistakenly named Lim Kit Siang as a "Thai opposition leader". Lim is a Malaysian opposition leader. The author more likely had either Chavalit or Chuan Leekpai in mind.]

This book is important not only for China but Asian countries on the advantages and cost of embracing the Western model. There is a clear and unmistakable hint in Zhang's book "The China Wave" that one cannot adopt an economic model without letting in the cultural flood - that is why China has to ask itself, will Western culture bring down what it has taken China so long to build?

This book exhibits the party line of China with only vague references to current issues.
For that purpose it is as interesting as the current Chinese News, but poorly documents major conflicts in the current state of China.

Black Holes, Wormholes and Time Machines, by Jim Al-Khalili

Do you know:

  • What might happen if you fall into a black hole?
  • That the Universe does not have an edge?
  • That the reason it gets dark at night is proof of the Big Bang?
  • That cosmic particles time-travel through the atmosphere defying death?
  • That our past, present and future might all coexist "out there"?

With two remarkable ideas, Albert Einstein revolutionized our view of the Universe. His first was that nothing can travel faster than light-the ultimate speed limit. This simple fact leads to the unavoidable conclusion that space and time must be linked together forever as Spacetime. With his second monumental insight, Einstein showed how Spacetime is warped and stretched by the gravity of all objects in the Universe and even punctured by black holes. But such possible twisting of Spacetime allowed a magic not even Einstein could have imagined: time-travel.

Theoretical physicist Jim Al-Khalili finally lays science fiction to rest as he opens up Einstein's Universe. Leading us gently and light-heartedly through the dizzying world of our space and time, he even gives us the recipe for a time machine, capable of taking us Back to the Future, to Alice's Wonderland, or on a trip with the Terminator.

    Review
… the reader will enjoy the clear and non-technical explanations strewn with historical anecdotes about the heroes of this quest for the understanding of what is space and time … Al-Khalili takes us by the hand to a fascinating world from which you may not return…
-Jean-Phillipe Uzan, Laboratoire de physique theorique, University of Paris, France

This is precisely the kind of book that I like reading. The pace of the journey as the ever more complex theories unfold is well handled. Jim Al-Khalili uses layman's language to his credit.
    -Vernon Nash

I know of no other book on this subject that is so accessible to the reader for whom relativity and quantum mechanics are new. The author's explanations are unusually clear, and he writes at a simple level without being patronizing or slow-paced. The tone is consistently good-humored, almost playful at times.
    -Publisher Tom Quinn

Jim Al-Khalili has produced, with earnest intentions, a concise, well written book … this is on the whole a pleasant, readable book.
    -Physics World

If you want to know about time, this is the book. I don't know of another nearly as good and I've read a lot of them. But more than telling you about time, what makes this book exceptional is that it conveys a wonderful sense of the beautiful excitement of scientific ideas.
-David Malone, Producer of BBC's Documentary The Flow of Time

Jim Al-Khalili has written a splendid popular book … The book would be an excellent resource for school teachers in both mathematics and physics to enrich their teaching, and to enthuse their students. … Many physicists will enjoy this easy-to-read book … I highly recommend it for teenagers with an interest in science and for non-scientists interested in the deep questions of our universe.
-Professor David G. Blair, University of Western Australia, The Physicist

Jim Al-Khalili's [book] is another of the many books about the wonders of the Universe and what we know about them. But with a difference, though. Enthusiasm to make everything understandable to the most untutored comes from every page. It's successful, it's humorous, and it's up to date. A great crib for furtive, refreshing use.
    -New Scientist

This is a popular book on general relativity and cosmology including black hole physics. Also, the history of these subjects is described, and a valuable list of references, including both popular and advanced levels, is attached … the book contains several nice figures to help understanding properties of relativity theory.
    -Hans-Jurgen Schmidt, Zentralblatt Math

Throughout the book, everything is surprisingly clear and the readers are left with lots of room for her/his imagination to follow their own thoughts, though not losing track of the trend … It is actually fun reading this book … This book gives a good impression of how special and general relativity affect our environment.
-Karsten Markus, Department of Astronomy, UCT

    Fun and interesting to read!
    By MT
This book is very well written with amazing examples to aid the reader with such complex topics
as general relativity and quantum mechanics which can be quite confusing at first glance. I am
sure to read this again as to gain a further grasp on the subjects in this addicting book that I had a
hard time putting down. It is fascinating thoughtful, thought provoking, and pleasing to read at
the same time, with many ties to popular culture and up to date physics. I must also admit that
this book made me look up to the night sky several times after I read it and in my opinion is a
great read for the physicist and non physicist alike! The author has a knack for explaining complex
ideas that involve the vastness of the universe and the tiniest theories of Quantum mechanics with
clarity and insight. This is a good one to add to the library which I will for sure pull out of mine
    several times for future reference.

An outstandingly easy and enjoyable read
    By P WILTON
If physics was this good and this interesting when I was at school then I think I would have my own PhD. Jim has written this book in the easiest and often most humerous way that even a Neanderthal could understand. It is a fun book to read and as Jim takes you from the beginings of One, Two, Three dimensions into the fourth and onto E=mc2 etc etc it is just like a "boys own" adventure story. The best dicription of "Entropy" I have ever encountered is in this book. I laughed so much when I read it. And the time travel analagy with the film "Terminator" was great. If your only a little bit interested in Physics you will be a whole lot more interested in it after you read this book. A great read which I will read again.

    Very Educated Man
    By K. Ryan
Jim Al-Khalili is extremely educated in this field and does a great job of explaining it to the average person. You do not need a strong background in science to understand. This is a great book for anyone interested in physics and astronomy.

OF LOVE AND DARKNESS kicks off the new Twisted Fate shape-shifter series. There are two kinds of shifters: Rakshasa and Light Ones. Rakshasa want to snack on human bones. Light Ones want to protect the humans.

Unfortunately, the Rakshasa are currently winning the battle, as the Light Ones are not fertile. Only one type of Light One, exceedingly rare females called Chala, are able to produce offspring. The Rakshasa know this, and have managed to nearly decimate the population.

Enter Gavin Rowan, a cursed Rakshasa who believes he is a Light One. He feels all his Rakshasa urges to kill, but has been cursed to protect the Light Ones instead.

Throw Sydney Amataya into the mix. She is a Chala--except she doesn't know it. At least not until Gavin saves her from a Rakshasa attack and then declares her as his mate.

But that's not how Sydney operates. Encouraged by her cross-dressing Fate, William, she refuses Gavin's claim. If he wants to mate with her--once she gets over the shock of discovering this supernatural world, that is--he's going to have to woo her, impress her, wine and dine her. Romance her. She deserves no less, end of the world be damned.

A FABULOUSLY COMPELLING AND MARVELOUSLY MAGICAL JOURNEY !!!
    By jlswainsboro/Judy Lewis
    Title: Of Love and Darkness
    Author: Tami Lund
Designation: Book One of Twisted Fate Series, Not A Standalone
    Genre: Paranormal/Fantasy Romance
    Reading Platform: Kindle Unlimited
My Rating: FIVE MAGNIFICENTLY MAGICAL STARS*****
Of Love and Darkness by Tami Lund is most definitely a homerun! Lund has successfully knocked it out of the park- again - with the first book in her spellbinding new series, Twisted Fate and I for one, absolutely love it! I first ventured into the land of all things Lund last year when I read Into The Light, the first book in Tami's amazingly successful Lightbearer Series which I also highly recommend. But of course, I didn't stop there! I was so impressed with her incredible talent, boundless imagination and extraordinary skill that I felt compelled to read "everything Lund" and what a treat it was! Now, I anxiously await each new release so I can dive into the fantastically unique worlds she creates for her readers which are always filled to the brim with action, adventure, suspense, magic, fantasy, irresistible characters and tumultuous paranormal/supernatural romance. Her books are like an all you can buffet and I seem to never get my fill! Yowza! I could talk about Tami Lund's exceptional talent all day but I digress, so let's talk about Of Love and Darkness. The story is exciting, thrilling, original, unique, action-packed, fast-paced, enchanting, romantic, sensual and at times, humorous. The dialogue is intelligent, powerful, exceptionally well written and flows effortlessly. The characters are remarkably well developed, fascinating, captivating, engaging, endearing, sexy and at times, laugh out loud funny. Lund skillfully crafts these elements into a tantalizing saga with a totally unique spin on paranormal romance filled with thrills, chills, heart-pounding adventure and heartbreaking sorrow.
    The premise of the story:
The timeline for this series is the present and the story begins in Detroit. There is a species of shape-shifters existing in the shadows and hiding in plain sight among the unsuspecting humans. The shifters are split into two basic groups, the dark ones, the Rakshasa who now hunt humans for sport and the light ones, the Chala who protect humans and are also hunted by the Rakshasa. The Chala are very rare and have been hunted to extinction by the Rakshasa. There is also another group of supernatural beings in the mix. The Fates are immortals that were once human but are reborn/created to protect the female Chala once they become fertile. Obviously, most of them are now unemployed. Just a little humor, folks and thankfully, there is also a good bit of comic relief in the book. The Fates can be killed but are then simply reborn. Although both groups of shifters probably share the same ancestry, the Rakshasa are determined to eliminate the Chala since they're the only deterrent standing between them and their human snacks. Yikes! In order for the Chala to replenish their race, they need a female Chala to mate with a male Chala and produce little baby Chalas. Now, that doesn't sound too difficult does it? Well, it kinda is since there are no more female Chala. The Rakshasa have killed them all! What? At least that's what everyone thought - until now!
    The plot of this story:
Three hundred eighty seven year old Gavin Rowan is a real-life monster. He was born a Rakshasa who hunted humans and Chala for sport. At one time, he was the leader of the North American Rakshasa Pack and is primarily responsible for the near extinction of the Chala. For one hundred and eighty seven years he struck terror in the hearts of all Chala. But, he finally tangled with the wrong Fate and killed her charge. Now, as the result of a two hundred year old curse, he is eternally damned to hunt his own kind and protect the Chala, only there are no Chala to protect. Or so he thought! So now, Gavin protects the unsuspecting humans and that ultimately leads him to quite a discovery.
Meet Sydney Amataya - an event planner and sometimes saleswoman in Detroit. She has no idea at all that she is a "light one", a very rare female Chala. She has been kept totally in the "dark" by her family who are now all deceased thanks to the Rakshasa and is now living with her stepbrother, William, who in reality is actually her guardian Fate and will remain her protector until she finds and bonds with her mate who then will take up the mantel. Whew! Yeah, I know, absolutely fascinating! Everything is going swimmingly for Sydney until one dark, fateful night when she is attacked and injured by a Rakshasa but is fortuitously rescued by our cursed champion, Gavin Rowan. And Shazam! She's his mate! What? At least that's what he claims and he does claim her! Oh my! She can't be his mate, she doesn't even know what that means. But she is sure of one thing, he's a real nut case because he keeps calling her Chala and can't seem to keep his hands off her. Despite being crazy, he is tall, dark and handsome and she's more than a little attracted to him. Well, actually more than attracted, she wants him! But he's nuts! Or is he??? I wonder??? Let the games begin! No spoilers from me but I will say this....Handsome, alpha Rakshasa cursed to protect his enemy and destined to love a Chala-check! Beautiful, kind-hearted Chala raised as human, thrown into an unfamiliar violent world, destined to bear the weight of continuing her race but falls in love with a cursed Rakshasa-check! An intriguing menagerie of strong, fascinating characters-check! Danger, drama, adventure, betrayal, suspense, a little magic, malevolent enemies and several surprising plot twists-check! Heated attraction, fiery passion, heartbreaking angst, sweet romance and some steamy love scenes-you bet! That and a whole lot more!
This is a full length novel but is the first book in a series. It doesn't exactly end in a cliffhanger nor does it have a happily ever after but more of a happy for now ending. And that's okay. We do get some closure for this couple but judging from the way this book is written, I have to assume that the adventure will continue and the next book will also deal with most of the same characters. I sure hope so because I really want to hear more about Gavin and Sydney! Deliciously cute, seriously sexy, completely captivating and delightfully entertaining! Fabulous entertainment and an awesome read!
My Final Rating: FIVE FAN-TAB-BULOUS STARS *****

    pulls you straight in!
    By MRS M D ATTENBOROUGH
Independent Reviewer for Paranormal Romance and Authors That Rock.

You know, somtimes, a book slowly pulls you in, nugdes at you with snippets and hints and you don't get the full story right away?? Not so here. You get grabbed by the head and pulled straight into a world that Sydney has no idea she is a part of and into a world that has Gavin cursed to save those he once hunted.

And I'm still not sure whether I liked that or not! Don't get me wrong, I really really enjoyed this story, it was just that pulling that I still can't get my head round!

Gavin is a Rakshasa, a race hell bent on killing every single Chala and Light One they can find. He is also cursed. 200 years ago, a Fate cursed him to protect those he once hunted, and when there appeared to be no more Chala left, he protected the humans whom the Rakshasa feed upon. Sydney is Chala. Although she didn't know this until Gavin found her and she was attacked by a Rakshasa on her way home. Sydney's blood is split and Gavin pronouces himself her mate and they will repopulate the world with lots of little Chala and Light Ones. He thinks. Sydney has something to say about that, and about the fact that William, her step brother/Fate protector knew all about this and didn't tell her. She isn't best pleased about the growing number of men in her apartment who want to claim her, either!

I liked Sydney. She makes no bones about what she wants and when she makes her mind up, who she wants. Gavin had a way of creeping into her heart, and her bed, that she didn't see coming. I also liked Gavin. He had been cursed 200 years ago, and thought that all the Chala, the only ones who can keep the race of Light Ones alive, where all gone. And Willaim! Who can't love William, the Fate who kept Sydney hidden all those years.

I loved that the curse is not fully explained, and that there is a twist that I did not quite see coming. AND!! I really loved that fact that, although when the Rakshasa first attack Sydney, they are wolves, later in the book, they are just called dogs. Lots of times! Shifters they are, but the book doesn't dwell on that fact. I loved that!

So, because of the jumping-straight-in beginning, and because I feel there is more to come, or there should be, of Sydney and Gavin,....

Thrilling to the end, an awesome read
    By Sherrie Campbell :)
I received this book as an arc for an honest review.
A cursed Rakasha(sp) an shifter similar to a wolf, Gavin Rowan was forced to hunt his own kind and kill them because of his murderous ways. Sydney Amataya a young party planner who can get lost faster then she can grad a phone. One dark cold night Sydney is attacked by a Rakasha when Gavin comes to her rescue and things get a bit scary for her, Sydney isn't sure what she just saw or to believe it. Their attraction ignites and Gavin's feels the pull of his mate in Sydney but she wants nothing to do with the massive ego leadin man. See Sydney has been hidden from this part of her world her intire life, she is the last of the female Light Ones and has no idea of her origins until she rushes to her so called step brother who really isn't her brother. As other male Light Ones appear at her door quickly to woo her, Gavin quickly realises he must find a way to make her his ( yes he is bit slow in that area, lol) Dates are set with the other men and Sydney soon realizes none of them are for her and she tells Gavin she does feel for him but there's one problem he can't have her he's cursed and not a true light one. As the evil starts to close in the all run to protect her and soon all hell starts to breakout lives are put in danger as the others help Gavin hunt and protect. I can't say anymore without giving away to much of the story you need to read it yourself especially if you love shifter paranormal romance. This was my first read from author Tami Lund and she has hooked me, can't wait the next installment of this series THUMBS UP!!!!!!

    Good text for the topic
    By Tom
The other reviewer's comment is true but irrelevant. It is a pretty boring read, but the fact is, if your instructor uses this text, then you have to use this text. Also, this is one of THE definitive texts on the subject. The text begins with methods of statistical analysis for the use in uncertainty analysis. It describes the methods for modeling and simulating error propagation (Monte Carlo Method, and Taylor Series Method), and methods to incorporate uncertainty analysis into the planning phases of experiments. It then moves into how to conduct a detailed uncertainty analysis of a major experimentation efforts.

When an engineer is presented with data, the first question he or she should ask is how good is the data. This book provides the reader with the tools needed to be able to determine a degree of goodness to a set of data.

I'd give 5 stars, but the book's too expensive. That's my only legitimate gripe about this book... but then again, there might be a reason this is the most expensive text on the subject.

Great work. This book is the reference in the topic
    By Fran
Many detail examples on experiments illustrates the reader how to apply the theory. In my case due to the complexity of the subjec in which i was working on I could not find enough help for some missing points but the whole text was a great guidance and I worked through it sternly and with pleasure.

Thorough and real, Vail's book is a good read
    By Moe Denham
As a Hammond B3 player for more years than I'd like to admit, I WILL admit I enjoyed this book tremendously. Now, it's not a tech manual, but I thought the book was laid out very well. It gave a good description of who Laurens Hammond was, such as being inventor of the electric clock. When doing research there's always gonna be some folks out there who may disagree with some statement, but that's just natural. I think that Mark Vail did an incredibly thorough job of researching this instrument and its history. He showed that he has a personal interest in it as well. A lot of people can just write a book 'cause they're paid to, but Mark has passion for the B. He showed it all the way through. I liked the reproductions of some of the original brochures, with the pictures of the different models. I remember those from when I was a kid -- my mother went to buy a Hammond and brought those brochures home. Quite often when I'm talking with someone about a particular model, I'll take out Mark's book and show them the photos and descriptions. He gives the year the models were built, what their price was -- that sort of stuff is very helpful and just plain fun to know.

Comprehensive Hammond and Leslie Info Under One Roof
    By Stephen Fortner
Previous to the publcation of Vail's book, newcomers seeking to penetrate the mystique surrounding the Hammond organ had to rely on a diffuse smattering of sources for information. Most such sources are commercial: technicians, restorers, shops dealing in vintage musical gear, etc. Though many of these specialists are deeply knoweldgable and provide great products and services, it's a small and competitive community, which can make it difficult for the curious novice to get objective information. As a younger keyboard nut, I personally bugged enough of those people to learn that most do not have the time or energy to play the role of educator, especially if a sale is not imminent.
Playing this role is exactly the point, though, when you have a book to sell, and Vail approaches this task with a thoroughness, integrity, and love of the subject that make this one of the best books of its kind. No. it's not an exhaustive technical reference, nor the end-all of any debate about the Hammond. It's not meant as such, any more than a docent-guided tour of a famous museum is meant to replace a PhD in art history. Rather, it's the beginning of a journey, and for this subject, a better beginning than we've ever had.
Among Vail's many sources are longtime Hammond exec Alan Young, who also shed light on the legacy of John Hanert, the engineer who made many of Laurens Hammond's ideas work, rotary speaker inventor Don Leslie, and a who's who of the jazz, rock, and gospel players that imprinted the Hammond-Leslie sound on our consciousness to the degree that even people who've never heard the name of the instrument recognize "that sound." While I haven't fact-checked every page, it is simply absurd to suggest any generalization that the sources are suspect or the information inaccurate.
Overall, this is an enjoyable and informative read that can save you a ton of legwork in approaching the realm of the mighty Hammond. The better part of a century lies between us and its conception, and some current repairers and restorers scrape part numbers off components so their work can't be duplicated. In such a world, Vail's book is as objective as it gets.

    Buy this book
    By Barry M. Gould
I had borrowed a copy of this book from a friend, and after skimming it, decided then and there I had to have my own copy; so I bought one.
It's great to see that someone took the time to research and write such an informative and interesting book on a very "niche" piece of the music industry.
It should be required reading for anyone interested in the Hammond organ, and it's history. Because of the amount of pictures and quotes, it makes for very "easy" reading. I finished it in about one day, and still refer to it!
    I recommend it, highly!
