The textbook for living

This book was on the night stand when I recently stayed at a friend's house. It was like I was talking to my shrink, and for the first he was telling me what he really thought and what expectations were real and what ones were unattainable. Very sobering, insightful and it's like your wise old uncle is finally telling you all the stuff you wondered about yourself psychologically. Very candid and down to earth. I enjoyed it so much that I lay the book down and immediately ordered a copy online to be waiting for me when I returned home.

About the Author

Chris Pye has been carving professionally for over 20 years. He started carving for a house-sign company, being paid per letter. Hundreds of signs later he had perfected an efficient and precise way of lettering, which he shares here. Chris writes regularly for Woodcarving magazine, and has written other books on carving. In addition to teaching woodcarving for all abilities, his is ordained into the Western Buddhist Order. He lives in Herefordshire, England with his family.

A beginners course

This is a very good beginners book... I just started wood carving and my technique wasn't very good. After following the tips and tricks that you learn from reading this well laid out book the letter's I am carving are much stronger and the shapes more fluid. I highly recommend this book.

Another excellent book from Chris Pye, all you need to know to start letter carving.

Written in Pye's usual thorough and detailed style, it helps you with selecting tools, how to hold your workpiece, shows different letter styles, both incised and raised lettering etc...

Buy the video if you buy the book

The book is excellent. I recommend it highly and use it daily, but the material came to life when I obtained the letter carving video (a lesson with Rob Cosman) as a companion piece. Seeing Chris explain, demonstrate and teach/correct,critique the theories and techniques to Rob in real time rather than reading about them provided a much better road-map to success than did the book alone.

For example, carving straight lines with straight chisels requires little explanation, but mastering the techniques for serifs, junctions,and arcs (both inside and outside curves) is much more complex. I've probably replayed certain sections of the tape 6-8 times, and although I should have it memorized by now still pick up something new each time. During the video Chris refers to the book as the in-depth authority of his methods and teachings, but acknowledges that "seeing is believing" insofar as the video is concerned.

Seeing Chris demonstrate them to Rob and the offer his observations and suggestions for improvement to a newbie holding the tools for the first time

Good book to start with, but not the only book to rely for completing the certification

Finally I have cleared the Cloud+ certification. Some tips for the people who are going to take this in future:
I am a programmer and had very little bit of knowledge about networking or storage. Don't consider this book as the only guide necessary to pass the certification. There is a 50-50 chance that you may or you may not pass the exam if you just study the contents in this book, considering that you are totally new to Storage and Networking.
This book gives only a high level understanding of the concept, this is not sufficient enough to know the actual usages. In the exam they test you for the actual usages and just knowing the definitions is not sufficient.
There is a lot of improvements which needs to be made in this book to be called as THE OFFICIAL STUDY GUIDE.
Since, I was a beginner to Cloud, this book was useful to get started and understand the basics. But, only when I researched on the topics in depth did I realize that what all useful information is missing in this book.

Exam/Study Tips:
For my study, I watched a lot of youtube videos about networking concepts which are part of this book. There are videos in youtube which give you very detailed information about the terminologies and why they are useful in real world.
The wiki is also a wonderful place to get the information in a neat and crisp format.
There is a site called as cybrary.it, which has video tutorial dedicated to this certification for free. Few tips from that video are also useful.
Know all the acronyms present in the CompTIA Objective guide. You should know what those are used for also. Many of the acronyms present in the guide are not part of this book.
Know the difference between terminologies which are very similar to each other like LUN masking/zoning etc. If you are not aware of the differences, then this can get very tricky.

The First Book You Should Study For The Cloud+ Certification!

Like all of these type of certifications, I used more than one source. This book was well worth the expense in studying for the Cloud+ exam. It is probably the best one to use for the first study guide you pick up. It does not dive as deep as the exam takes you in places, however it will give you a good all around understanding of what you need to know to pass the Cloud+ exam. It is well written and easy to understand. Out of all the books I read for Cloud+, this one was the best.

If you have not worked in a cloud or virtualization environment, this can be a tricky exam. It is certainly doable, without cloud experience. I have never worked in those environments and I am not a technical guy and I passed the exam on my first attempt. To me the areas that were the most challenging was virtualization and storage.

My advice is to purchase this book and at least one other for your studies. Take the time to actually learn the material! Also, as with all CompTIA exams, the test itself is vendor neutral. Do not spend much time learning how to operate the different proprietary platforms and their capabilities. There will be no questions on things such as Microsoft Hyper-V or VMware.

Passed the Cloud+ Exam with an 810/900 using this book

My colleague and I used this book and both passed the Cloud+ Exam a mere 6 days ago. I can tell you that this book does cover all the topics we ran across on the exam. We are both Network Engineers who work at a good sized data center so we have background in many of the topics. Some of the topics are not explained well for a first timer but are sufficient review for those who already know about it and are just studying for the exam. I would normally give the book 5 stars since it was my sole source for the exam and I passed but have to downgrade 1 star because of the digital price. I bought the Kindle version and my colleague bought the print version. I paid about $2 less for the Kindle version which seems too high being that they save on printing and shipping a book. Also, his came with a CD with practice exams and mine was a download. However, one of the practice tests was different between the two and the print version did not have Appendix B.

At this time, this is pretty much the only Cloud+ available so if you are interested in taking the exam, buy this book, and search the internet for any topics you need more help with. (Hint: The book specifically talks about RAID 0,1,5, 6, 0+1, and 1+0 but mentions you should know all RAID levels (i.e including RAID 3/4) so I would research those not covered by the book specifically)

The exuberant turkeys--Ollie, Stanley, Larry, Moe, Wally, Beaver and Groucho--catch the children up in raucous barnyard antics until the merriment is quelled by the sight of the ax. Deeply touched by the turkeys' plight, the children--who have grown mysteriously fatter and have feathers sticking out from under their clothes--board the bus to go back to the city. The next night, family silhouettes can be seen--each with a grateful turkey guest--as "They feasted on veggies / With jelly and toast." This humorous, lighthearted story is adorned with bold, bright illustrations that convey a sense of wacky high-spiritedness sometimes lacking in traditional holiday fare. Ages 4-7.

Pilkey has adapted Clement Moore's classic poem for another holiday. The day before Thanksgiving finds eight boys and girls of various races taking a field trip to a turkey farm. Although Farmer Mack Nuggett seems kind at first, the children eventually discover his horrible plan to kill the turkeys for Thanksgiving dinners. Smuggling the turkeys home with them, the children save the birds, who join eight families for vegetarian dinners. The weakest part of this slapstick offering is the verse, in part because the story isn't at all parallel to Moore's and in part because of the stretches in rhyme to accommodate a pre-existing pattern. Some of the word play will escape children. Similarly, visual humor such as the placement of Farmer Nuggett and the teacher in an "American Gothic" pose will remain unappreciated by those too young for Grant Wood. The cartoon illustrations reinforce the story's general silliness but are unremarkable in themselves. Those seeking Thanksgiving humor will better served by Marc Brown's Arthur's Thanksgiving (Little, 1983), while those looking for a human-turkey relationship should dust off Lorna Balian's Sometimes It's Turkey, Sometimes It's Feathers (Abingdon, 1986). --Kathy Piehl, Mankato State University, MN

So each one gave thanks for love and for living...

This book is not vegan propaganda. The author was not vegan or vegetarian at the time that he wrote this. He set out to write a fun, Thanksgiving-themed children's book set to the tone of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, and he accomplished that. The kids are dreaming of drumsticks during the bus ride, but save the turkeys in the end. That isn't a bad thing and I don't get the complaint that some people seem to have with that.

This is a fun book that really shows the sweetness and sensitivity of children. We have rescued chickens and while kids sometimes meet them with a little reservation at first, once they realize that the chickens are friendly, they are eager to feed and spend time with them. For a lot of kids, meeting new animals is a magical experience. A couple of days ago, a little girl was over and my daughter introduced her to our adopted potbelly pig. Her eyes lit up and she was so excited to get to feed her carrots and have her roll for belly rubs. The girl's dad thought we planned to butcher the pig and his daughter's eyes grew wide in horror and then softened when we said that Elsa is never going to be eaten. Her dad seemed disappointed that he couldn't get in on the meat. In that way, he reminded me of Farmer Mack Nugget in this book. A nice enough guy, likes kids, but has no trouble with killing an animal he knows and eating the result. Most kids aren't like that. They want to help animals and be their friends. Kids can come up with pretty hilarious ways of trying to solve such problems. That is what happens here. As soon as the kids have a chance to save the turkeys, they do! It would never work in real life, but is fun to see on paper and little kids love looking at the feathers and feet sticking out from under coats and giggling. There is only one briefly scary part (when Farmer Nugget says what the ax is for. Who leaves things like that lying around for kids to pick up anyway?), but it quickly passes and everything else is very light-hearted.

Although I purchased this book for Thanksgiving, my 3-year-old enjoys it randomly regardless of the season. Yes, we are a vegan family, and I would recommend it to other vegan families, but I really think it is a book that most little kids can enjoy. The book ends with a very positive message of what to be thankful for and it is a message that all of us can use.

As a side note, what's the deal with offering water when someone is upset? Here, the farmer and teacher rush to the well to bring back water to calm the children, but it's in soap operas too. "Yeah, so I hate to break it to you, but the love of your life was in a boat that explodd and we can't find his body, but surely he is dead. Want some water?". I have always wondered about that.

Refreshing, sweet, and fun!

This book offers a beautiful lesson rarely taught by children's stories: that showing love and compassion to ALL creatures may be more fulfilling than accepting the status quo! The author bravely challenges American cultural convention, and does so with grace, humor, and tact. The result is a very non-judgmental, but rather encouraging, message about the humanity naturally exercised by children's spirits, regardless of the unfortunate holiday traditions that may be taken for granted by adults. The last page ties the story together with warmth and a surprisingly happy ending! Written in up-beat, sing-song rhyme, and playfully illustrated, 'Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving is a must-have for parents who encourage their children to think critically and lovingly.

Turkey Day Delight

Not part of the "Night Before _____" series that seems to cover every holiday and life event (though there is a "Night Before Thanksgiving" from that publisher that is also quite charming), this is the story of a pre-Thanksgiving field trip in the style of Clement Moore's "Twas the Night Before Christmas."

This adorable tale definitely has a vegetarian agenda, but I certainly didn't think it was pushy about it and, heck, we read it every year while roasting turkey, though I see how this might cause some kids distress. (Like the kids in the story, actually.)

Our paperback copy was so worn, I was thrilled to find this hardcover version on Amazon. I think it deserves to be a children's classic and the art, and story, are both top notch and still laugh-out-loud amusing for my four-year-old, who has been reading this story for the past several years. (Only get it out at Thanksgiving time.)

Hunter's Way with different characters

Many people have given this book a bad review because they feel that it's basically Hunter's Way but with two new characters, however aren't most of her novels like this? Like one reviewer basically stated, two women meet (usually one out and the other either in the closet or questions their sexuality once meeting the other woman). Both are unable to be together for one reason or another but in the end things work out in their favor. The only difference are the events leading up to the ending. Either way Gerri Hill is one of my favorite authors even though everyone knows how her novels will end (at least when it comes to the love story.

That being said, this novel wasnt as good as Hunter's Way but was still a good read. The ending, that some people are complaining about, is a bit upsetting however Gerri Hill has posted something on her website in response to some people's questions. [...]

more of the same & a boring mystery

the romance is this book is according to a pattern which readers of gerri hill have by now come to be familiar with. they start out as friends, cannot help but fall in love, try to deny it first but cannot help the gravity of their feelings. been there, read that. as if in compensation, the love scenes are quite hot.
what really killed me was the mystery, however. it was just boring, boring, boring. and to end the book with a cliff-hanger, that seemed to be quite lazy.

Last in the series and I was disappointed!!

This one was all about getting to know a new set of partners and in the beginning, seemed VERY similar to how Tori and Sam got together. In some ways, even though the characters backgrounds were slightly different, there were still some similarities. I did expect much Tori and Sam interaction here, so I was not disappointed by the lack of it. The case was kind of weird but interesting enough. My biggest issue? The ending!! Oh my god! I won't spoil it, but when you read it, you'll know what I mean. 3 stars exactly on this one folks.
