About the Author
Brian Mossop was a French-to-English translator, reviser and trainer at the Canadian Government's Translation Bureau for forty years. Since 1979, he has also been teaching revision, scientific translation, translation theory and translation into the second language at the York University School of Translation.

The best chemistry together!

Not all books involving three people work but this one did. Not only that but one of them didn't even realize he was gay(Mac) It was very very nice having Daniel and Trelain help him along the way to that discovery. They all had the best chemistry together. So hot and so sweet. They just all worked together. I'm really going to miss reading about them. I know I enjoy a book when I keep thinking about it when it's done. I hated that it had to end.

Who knew M/M romance could be so addicting?

So here's the deal, I'm a straight, married, 40-something-ish woman and I love, love loved this book. The writing is sound, the story compelling, and there was just enough intrigue to keep me turning pages. I read this in a single day, forgetting I had kids, dogs, and a husband to care for. Eh, they can fend for themselves! When you have a great book in your hands, nothing else matters.

This book is hot. Like, fabulously sexy hot. I fell so in love with Mac, Trelain, and Daniel, that I'm begging for them to have a new adventure. Please, Ms. Lain, write more with these three super sexy men.

Until then, I'll read all of this author's works to keep me satisfied.

Heartfelt Love Story

Unless it was written by the amazing J.P. Barnaby, I don't usually read m/m, let alone m/m/m, but this book was recommended to me by a friend, and I'm so glad it was. There were a couple thin points in the plot, but I fell so hard in love with these characters that I just didn't care. I stayed up until 4am reading because I HAD to finish it, and then stayed up an extra 20 minutes so I could write this review. I cried happy tears when it was over, and wish there was a sequel. Such a beautiful love story.

This is so much better than Skype for video chatting

This is so much better than Skype for video chatting. I travel often for work and my husband and I were constantly losing calls on Skype and the video quality was terrible, despite having fast internet connection. JusTalk video and audio quality is great and we haven't lost any calls on it. The drawing and game features are cute and funny when I'm talking to my daughter.

Not as thought-provoking, but better than If I Stay in many ways

First Sentence: Every morning I wake up and tell myself this: It's just one day, another twenty-four hour period to get yourself through.

How I Acquired the Book: Borrowed from my town's library.

The Review (with MINOR SPOILERS): I suppose I should start off this review by saying that Where She Went is very different from its predecessor, If I Stay. For the first half, Where She Went was very slow, dragged in the plot, and felt as if it were some new trashy teen lit. While I was reading the first half, I kept thinking, "Wow, If I Stay would be better if it had stayed alone." Where She Went certainly was not the book If I Stay was. In my opinion, although it didn't change mine, If I Stay had the potential to change people's lives. However, I can't say the same for Where She Went.

While I thought the ending of If I Stay was a very nice and sweet ending, obviously, some others did not, and that is, I suppose, what prompted Ms. Forman to write this book. Where She Went picks up three years after Mia's tragic car accident that killed her family, but not her. But this time, the story's told from Adam's point of view. In the three years that have passed, he has become a rock star. Mia, meanwhile, has reportedly become "the next Yo-Yo Ma."

That was one major complaint I had with Where She Went: the whole unrealisticness of it all. (Hey, is that even a word?) Seriously, how, after three years, are they both supposed to be ridiculously famous? The improbability of that really staggers me, and detracted a lot from my reading experience. Even Adam describes it perfectly on page 228: "It's just: Kim. You. Me. We all came from this nowhere town in Oregon, and look at us. All three of us have gone to, well, extremes. You gotta admit, it's kind of weird."

Yes, Adam, it is kind of weird. Therefore I have no idea why your creator would choose to make it so weird.

Moving on: One thing that really annoyed me in If I Stay was Mia's character. She was boring. Period. Adam is a totally different story. He's much more emotional, and much more interesting to read about. Mia, of course, is still quite boring, but now that she's in the third person, it's not quite as bad. I totally preferred Adam's voice to Mia's voice.

Where She Went, at the core, is absolutely a romance novel. Gone are the thought-provoking questions that If I Stay raised; welcome, character interaction and thoughts. I don't think everyone who liked If I Stay will like Where She Went, but I definitely liked this book better. For romance lovers and lovers of Mia and Adam, this book is a dream come true. While the first half was sluggish and unforgivable, the second half redeems this book.

I really wish Amazon would let us give half-star ratings, because I really want to give this book 3.5 stars, and this is a positive review, not a critical review. As a reference, I think If I Stay deserves 2.5 stars. So if If I Stay left you begging for more of Mia and Adam, read this. Your wish has been granted.

Better than "If I Stay"

I wonder if it is ok that I liked Where She Went so much more than its predecessor. I mean, If I Stay was all about people dying and lying in coma and there were hardly any tears in my eyes and here I spent hours sobbing over a guy's broken heart? Am I that much into emo guys?

Don't think that's the answer though. Super-emo Shiver (Wolves of Mercy Falls)'s Sam and Beautiful Creatures's Ethan didn't rock my boat and how could they with their obsessions over puffy coats, Scarlett O'Hara and leaky womb type poetry? Adam Wilde is emo of a different, Tom Mackee (The Piper's Son) kind. He is broken, messed up, hopeless, talented and he can love!

Adam's story was just so, so bitter. Throughout the book I felt that exactly like him, I was filled with pain and resentment towards Mia's decisions. The eventual release of all the pent-up anger (accompanied my uncontrollable sobs) was, I believe, as cathartic for me as it was for Adam. This book was a fantastic study of grief, loss and forgiveness. Beautifully, beautifully written.

Ladies, have you hankies ready for this one, 'cause I am tearing up again just thinking about it.

Why I Read this Book: This book is a must read for anyone who's read If I Stay. In fact, if you've already read If I Stay, chances are you been anxiously awaiting the release for the sequel. There was a pretty big cliffhanger at the end of If I Stay and if you're like me, you need to know what happens next. And you get that closure in Where She Went.

What I Liked: If I Stay was a great emotional and thought-provoking read. And because I was late jumping on the reading bandwagon (I didn't read that book until late last year), lucky for me I didn't have too long to wait for the answers that are found in Where She Went. If I Stay was first published in January of 2009, so some people have been waiting over 2 years for closure. Well wait no more, the time has finally come! Today is release day for Where She Went.

I really liked that this book was told from Adam's POV (1st person narrative). If I Stay was completely Mia's story; her traumatic experience, her story, her flashbacks. In Where She Went, we finally get Adam's side of the story; from back when Mia was in a coma from the accident until now, 3 years later. It was good to see where and how Adam and Mia each ended up 3 years after her tragic accident.

Adam pours his heart and emotions into his lyrics and shares them with the world. Every other chapter leads with a sampling of Adam's lyrics. Angst, torment and bitter emotions drip from his words.

One of my favorite lines (that accurately describes Mia's present journey) is Gran's theory on why Mia was afraid of butterflies when she was younger:

"She said it was because one day I was going to have to go through a metamorphosis like a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly and that scared me, so butterflies scared me."

What I Didn't Like: Adam was a bit annoying at times with his whining. His character has had to grieve and he's had some growing up to do. He knows that Mia hasn't had an easy road but the void is not easy for him to digest.

Overall Impression: Where She Went is a great companion novel. I got the emotional read I was expecting and the closure I needed. Gayle Forman brings a wide range of emotions to these pages, even the raw and gritty kind, and sometimes they come in waves. Have the tissues ready.

Gods Word - What a blessing.

(Recipes include "Dark Night of the Soul Food", "Render Unto Caesar Salad", and "Valley of the Shadow of Death by Chocolate Cake".)

In "Virtue of the Month", the ghost of Ms. Freedman's mother argues that suicide is not a choice. In "The Un-Game", Janice's chain-smoking nursing home charge composes a dirty limerick. In "The Hall of Old-Testament Miracles", wax figures of Bible characters come to life, hungry for Cody's flesh.

Set against a South Texas landscape where cicadas hum and the air smells of taco stands and jasmine flowers, these stories range from laugh-out-loud funny to achingly poignant. This surreal, exuberant collection mines the dark recesses of the soul while illuminating the human heart.

Kathleen Founds's WHEN MYSTICAL CREATURES ATTACK is the most fun and memorable book I've read in years, and easily one of the best novels-in-stories I've ever read. It's hilarious, consistently surprising, heartbreaking, challenging, warm, and just an all-around exceptional debut from one of our smartest young writers. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Dark humor with a lot of light

This book is beyond fabulous. I read it in one gulp. I couldn't help it. Though it is a book of short stories, they are tied together and pull you in. I don't think I've read a book that has made me laugh this hard, ever. Her characters are smart, witty, colorful, and substantial. Each character feels like someone I've known, good or bad. And I was invested in each of them thoroughly.

When you read this book you find humor in the dark, sadness in the light, and a bit of kindness and compassion in everyone. It's lovely. Highly, highly recommended!

“Plenty of teachers have thrown a terrarium out a window and shouted, ‘You’re driving me crazy!’ But you’re the first who actually followed through.”

First off I have to say that this book wasn’t at all what I first expected. I expected a witty commentary about how a school teacher in the midst of a midlife crisis is handling school systems, parents, and disrespectful students. What I got instead was a book full of life lessons learned through experience and through the eyes of others.

The three main characters are Laurel Freedman- the teacher- and two of her students, Janice and Cody. Laurel’s mother had mental problems of her own, and her father wasn’t exactly “Father of the Year” material, but she was a young teacher determined she would change the world through her students. BUT, she suffers from a mental disorder (bipolar?) which eventually leads her to a mental breakdown- which is really where the novel begins (our story here isn’t linear).

Janice was abandoned by her mother as a child, and left to live with her aunt when her father remarries. Her character is a hurting teenage girl with a problem “acting out” for attention.

Cody is the dreamer/geek of the group. His short stories are my favorite featured in the novel and will most likely get the most laughs.

There are times when the point of view switches to second person, which really just confuses the story and made me want to skim over those parts. The rest of the story is first person from one character to another through letters, e-mails, cookbook recipes, and short stories- which really worked. I don’t know why there were sudden switches to second person that just blew off the flow of the story.

Overall, I would recommend When Mystical Creatures Attack to anyone who enjoys novels with mixed media (email, letters, etc…) and that’s hits serious topics but still a bit on the silly side.
