An absolute "must have" text for sign designers

As a registered engineer with 35 years in the sign industry, I find Dr. Jones book to be without equal within the industry. Taking a complex subject and reducing it to understandable concepts, he has contributed greatly to improved safety and functionality for sign builders and sign users. This text would also be excellent for any design or structural engineer in that it approaches some unique design difficulties with a simple, yet effective approach to engineering. The accompanying spreadsheets which are offered on-line for downloading help the reader to master the concepts presented.

Finally the sign building industry is beginning to establish some standards. This long overdue book on the basics of engineering sign structures (mainly freestanding signs) covers all the pertinent loads, sign columns, footings, connections, and even discusses up-to-date software techniques and offers some simple spreadsheet files for engineering sign poles and footings. A must for everyone working in the industry.

Short On Practice Problems

I homeschool two boys and we have previously used the Spectrum series of workbooks for math.

The Good
This book is colorful and well laid out. It is easy to understand as it provides clear, easy to follow examples using relatively large font size for this type of workbook.

The Bad
Each lesson really only comes with a few practice problems. We were disappointed with the amount of practice this book provides. Further, the pages are not perforated which makes it more difficult to tear them out, the Spectrum workbooks we have used are perforated.

Summary
I am a big believer in practice makes perfect and this workbook just does not cut it when it comes to providing enough practice questions. I also like to tear the pages out to prevent my boys from looking at the answer sheet while doing their daily work, which this book makes difficult. I will definitely not purchase workbooks from this publisher again in the future. I will likely go ahead and order the Spectrum series again and consider this a lesson learned.

This is a very good book to keep your child's brain active during the summer months. My daughter does a few pages everyday and never complains.

this is a generally good book. of course, but as textbooks go, this is worth it. the material is as clear as can be, so that makes it a little easier to deal with an otherwise tough subject.

Probably not the best for an Elementary Fluids course

The title of this book is misleading--there is nothing elementary in this book. Flipping through this book one will probably become intimidated by sheer volume of "difficult math". This book might be of great help in a graduate level Fluid Mechanics course, but the definitions, derivations, and concepts in general are too difficult for an undergraduate. If you have a good instructor, he or she will probably be able to simplify things for you, otherwise the book will teach you nothing. Many of the problems/examples, however, seem to be simple enough and can be solved using simple equations, so one wonders why the text goes in to so much detail using esoteric mathematics. If you are an undergraduate, and your instructor makes you buy this book, be sure to get some sort of supplementary outline book, or else you will probably be lost.

It seems like I just have too many unused and unwanted things

Despite a few flaws this book is a must read for anyone interested in simplifying their life or gaining more insight into the minimalist movement.
I bought this book because I was curious about the concept of de-cluttering . It seems like I just have too many unused and unwanted things. The author’s insight and knowledge of his subject was right on. It gave me lots to think about.
While there are a few things I wish he’d expanded upon more the book is definitely a must read for any budding minimalists or even just people who are curious about simplifying their lives.
The concept of de-cluttering your emotional life really hit a chord with me. It makes sense to get yourself emotionally prepared to take on the challenge of simplification.
Great book! I heartily recommend it.

Make it work for you, do not work for it

Having been through a forced self examination period, the author came to understand what was really important to him and in the book he shares some very valid insight.

Some key take aways that I got from this book:

You need to really understand what your version of simplify means before you start this journey.
Know what really makes you happy, if you don't know, find out.
When you know what makes you happy, make it a priority.
Sometimes you just have to release and let it go.
It's OK to say no to yourself and to others.
Is it really important?
Make it work for you, do not become a slave to it.

This book is definitely a good read and probably has some value for everyone. Even if you are not into your version of simplification, there should be some valuable take aways in this book for you.

The truth about Afghanistan

Exhaustive account of what is really happening in Afghanistan, written by an extraordinary and extremely brave woman. Since her birth she has seen her country always occupied by foreign forces or otherwise brutal regimes. But never has she given up her struggle and hope for better times, bringing at last real democracy and with it rights and education for women too.
