Whilst the process of biography was rendered difficult by a lack of first-hand documentation - the carefully accumulated material in Giangaleazzo's chanceries was destroyed when the Castello of Milan was razed to the ground - an idea of his character was developed through the use of evidence from other government sources. The end product will be of value to anyone with an interest in Giangaleazzo and medieval European history.

Bueno da Mesquita's study of Giangaleazzo Visconti, duke of Milan, is one of the finest studies of an Italian Renaissance 'despotism' that has been produced, and has not been replaced in either Italian or English. Unfortunately it was published - by CUP - in 1940, and has not had the circulation it deserves. A reprint - possibly with an updating introduction - would make a valuable contribution to the current state of politics and state-building in Renaissance Italy.

Oppressive smoke from nearby wildfires grows ever denser, the story's ticking bomb. James, a wanderer with a stolen gun and a wallet full of his stepfather's cash, heads Bridget and Ruth's way, tracking his dead biological father, guided by a handful of photographs and the rumors of some hobos. The hateful sexuality simmering behind Bridget and Ruth's friendship explodes into a relatively predictable m�nage � trois that kicks off a storm of violence, dramatically coinciding with the inescapable arrival of the wildfires. The relationships here are more complicated than they seem—the uncanny physical resemblance between James and Bridget provides a mystery that's easy for the reader to solve, but it's fascinating to watch Ruth misunderstand the obvious over and over, her clarity fogged by too many drinks and an inability to see her own value. Cauchon's characters have serrated edges; they're impossible to like, but they'll get under the reader's skin. (Nov.)

Great new literary voice

Two narrators, one boy one girl, navigate the fraught and fiery landscape of summertime Missoula. They are searching. Looking for something specific, anything with a purpose and bearing. But, because their vision is clouded (the smoke? the drugs?) they don't find much of anything new. They lose their way, double back upon themselves, fall into the same holes, see the same people. Until they don't and everything is different, and indiscernible and wrong.
This book is weirdly hard. Unobtrusive until you see yourself in the characters (and likely you will) and are confronted with the nothing and everything that life can be.
Read it for it's prose, it's excellent pop culture references and the fact that it doesn't ask the direct question for you.
Also, and I am not trying to be righteous, Two Dollar Radio is an amazing independent publisher. If, only IF, you can, perhaps buy the book directly from them. Otherwise, get it how you can. It's worth it.

Dark Magic

This extraordinary novel sets two ghostly voices spinning around each other, builds incredible cyclonic tension. The deep strangeness of the characters' perspectives emerges only slowly, and mainly through the perfectly off-balanced images with which the author condenses their perceptual lives. I was enthralled by the story, until the end, which was a challenge for me. Unexpectedly difficult, which I think I actually like.

Two lines (of many) I marked:

"her eyes glinting like gas vapor on the air..."

"I couldn't say baby. It was embarrassing. Like saying Revolution or I love you."

(The freakish context of this last line ignites it.)

The language of this book is what really gets me. There's a scene near the beginning describing a drug-addled dance, and the narrator--a woman stuck in some nightmarishly dead-ending friendship that's also completely riddled with destructive desire--says, "Shoulders and torsos swarmed me. I was struck in the face and inhaled my own bone smell and blood smell with iron and thick." Something about the fractured repetitiveness of this sentence, its doped-up grammar, strikes to the heart of what I like about this novel, Nothing. It's recursive and scary. It trusts that the reader can be drawn to characters who are far far far from the kinds of self-knowledge we associate with stability and trust. Or maybe they just know too much, and they see the actual nothing.

More books should have creeping forest fires and smoke. More books should have the line "as if there was such a thing as human feeling." It's not the comfortable kind of scary, but this book is scary--and it is good.

Well-written Chronology of the Automobile

"The Automobile Age" is a complete, authoritative book about the cultural and historical aspects of the automobile. Fascinating and richly detailed, it details the most important and influential invention of the nineteenth century, besides the telephone, and its impact on everyday life. There are 20 chapters plus an epilogue, "The Future of the Automobile" in this indexed work, full of illustrations that take a logical flow of direction. It begins with "The Automotive Idea," giving the reader a knowledgeable base with which to understand that the automobile was not the creation of just one person, but of many brilliant minds over the past few centuries. It is almost hard to imagine the extent that the automobile has undergone to arrive in its present state, a hybrid of early chariots, bicycles and, believe it or not, simple tools. Despite what the car hater may think, Flink points out that, regardless of the minority opinion the development of the automobile was a requirement. It had to happen. Basically the development of the car was a collective effort with no other ultimate expression. From Chapter 3, "The Emerging Industry" and Chapter 4, "Fordism", on through "Hard Times" in Chapter 11--citing the impact of the Great Depression on the automotive industry--and on to Chapter 17, "Japan as Number One," the book is difficult to set aside as it educate about how foreign markets began to take over in the 1960's and 1970's what was thought to be a singularly American creation.

"The Automobile Age" is a must-read for any automotive mechanic or driving school instructor. There is far too much information to be absorbed in a single reading, and is best read in sections. This book is an education in itself, and the price is far less than even a single college credit.

A Definitive Source

I am not an automobile enthusiast. In fact, until I read this book I was somewhat of an unenthusiast, but I loved this book. It is scholarly and authoritative without being cumbersome or boring. I have taken oral histories of older people who told me how much the automobile changed their lives, but this book gave me a tremendous understanding as to how and why the automobile not only changed our lives, but helped to define our role in the world. Flink does not leave out anything of importance, covering the themes of culture, the world wars, the international competition, and all the important individuals. He de-mythed some of the misconceptions I had (about Henry Ford's various roles, for example), and truly explains how the automobile industry got to where it is today. The only drawback at all about this book is that it was written to include information up until 1985, so is not entirely up to the current day. Nevertheless, the reader can use this book as the Bible of car history. A very enlightening volume.

In his Uropathy: The Most Powerful Holistic Therapy, pee's the ultimate cure-all. Gagging aside, it's not so unconventional: former Indian prime minister Morarji Desai guzzled ounces each morning, observing an ancient Hindu practice. Lara learned about it 11 years ago, when the self-taught therapist he's never studied traditional medicine became disenchanted with science's inability to cure his ailments. Since then he's lectured to thousands. Not any pee will do it must be your own, which Lara says is a nontoxic biofeedback stimulator that boosts immunity by activating the lymphatic system, thus restoring the body to an internally balanced state of health. Dosages range from a few drops of Lara's "Ultimate Universal Remedy" an elixir of water, urine, and white rum to several ounces for serious conditions like cancer, dysentery, or Alzheimer's. Of course, not everyone is ready for this leap of faith. On his Web site Lara argues against obsessing over taste and smell: "Urine is a sample of what is flowing through your veins and repulsive urine should be a motivation to improve the internal conditions, rather than an excuse for not using Uropathy." -- The Village Voice

About the Author
Martin Lara was born in the Dominican Republic in 1953 and immigrated to the United States in 1973. Since early childhood he was plagued with numerous diseases until the age of 35 when he decided to take control of his own health. Since then he has been able to eliminate or control all his health problems by using natural, cheap and readily available products. He started writing his book in 1989 to share with everyone what he had discovered at the time. Everyone loved the simplicity and cleverness with which he approached diseases and they started a network of alternative medicine researchers that communicated back and forth to help each other deal with the health problems of all. He lectured every month since 89 at the Community Center on West 13th Street in Manhattan in a support group for people concerned with or afflicted by AIDS where hundreds of people learned to live normal and healthy lives naturally being HIV+. Since then Martin Lara has participate! ! d in an international conference in Germany and has traveled extensively to other countries in the world to share with everyone all he has discovered since he started researching. His book is fun to read and a serendipitous discovery for all healthy people who whish to remain healthy and for sick people who want to improve their conditions.

Best Kept Secrets of Urine Therapy Revealed !

The best Urine Therapy book ever written , this is the most heretic medical book available in the world. This book works very well with " Cure for All Diseases " by Hulda Regehr Clark, if you unify the teachings of both books what you will have in your hands is a powerful healing weapon. Lara's Universal Remedy or Urine Injections can replace the Clark's Zapper, and are more effective to kill, control and assimilate malign invader microorganisms.

This is the best book out there on urine therapy!

I have purchased every book amazon has on urine therapy and this is, by far, the most informative book with descriptions of therapies, your lymphatic system and how it acts as a cleansing system, how to fight cancer, skin disorders, along with many many other disorders of the body and in general, how to use urine to it's best advantage for your body. It lists individual therapies for numerous health issues. This book has the most specific descriptions on how to use urine.

If you can only purchase one, make it this one. Well worth the money.

fabulous book

I have read many books on uropathy and I think it is vital for people to be aware of this gift from Nature. In our troubled times, knowing that this golden elixir can be the solution to so many causes of disease is a blessing and a powerful tool. All it takes to fully embrace it is that we are able to open our minds enough to get rid of the nonsense that has filled our heads regarding this amazing and taylor made product.
Martin's use of English is sometimes a little strange but we soon get used to it and he obviously speaks from the heart and has a wealth of experience.

I should have been clued in by this book's title, but I was still disappointed when I realized that damselflies were not included in the guide. Since one of my entomological challenges is distinguishing damselflies from their generally larger and faster flying odonate cousins, it would have been nice to have both in one book.

Whining aside, "Dragonflies through Binoculars" contains a good, well-organized collection of photographs and descriptions of living dragonflies, with 47 plates in full color, plus information on all 307 species found in North America. These ancient insects are enameled in heraldic designs of stripes, checks, and diagonals as though they were about to fly off to an aerial jousting match---which is probably just what they will do as soon as you have your binoculars trained on them. I even saw one dragonfly with a miniature death's-head emblazoned on its thorax.

If you think I'm the only romantic concerning these fascinating Paleozoic-era hunters, tell me why they have been christened with such outlandish names as 'Ebony Boghaunter' or 'Stygian Shadowdragon.'

This book is more concerned with the current ecology of the dragonfly, rather than its 300-million year history.
