About the Author
Charles Darwin was an English naturalist and author best-known for his revolutionary theories on the origin of species, human evolution, and natural selection. A life-long interest in the natural world led Darwin to neglect his medical studies and instead embark on a five-year scientific voyage on the HMS Beagle, where he established his reputation as a geologist and gathered much of the evidence that fuelled his later theories.A prolific writer, Darwin s most famous published works include The Voyage of the Beagle, On the Origin of Species, The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex, and The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals. Darwin died in 1882, and in recognition of his contributions to science, is buried in Westminster Abbey along with John Herschel and Isaac Newton.

"No matter how proficient, companies who fail to understand and apply Block's concepts risk operating at the vendor level with their clients rather than at the partner level-a potentially mortal risk in an increasingly strategic marketplace." (Fred Lamparter, director of worldwide training, Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide)

"As we encourage our IT professionals to pursue continuous learning, this 'Fieldbook' will be added to their skill-building toolkit. We've used Block's Flawless Consulting guidelines to define the basic consulting skills program." (Cassandra A. Matthews, vice president, Information Technology and CIO, PECO Energy Company)

Bedtime stories Consultants read their Children
By Walter J. Adamson
I have the 2nd edition of Block's "Flawless" and find it an essential reference, true to its reputation. Disappointingly in this Companion many of the authors seem to treat the readers as a captive audience - at the level of first year college students. For example - a diatribe on Romeo and Juliet as an illustration of human diversity, or three pages of "my worse experiences" one of which transpired to be freezing on stage and losing the point. These type of chapters annoyed me and distracted me from some of the worthy contributions. So much so that I returned the book to the bookshop and asked for my money back - the first time I have done so in 30 years of buying management books. In my opinion this book is a dud riding on the coat tails of the previous 'flawless' success.

Some real keys strong client relationships
By Linda Zarate
This book is a wonderful resource for consultants, business systems analysts and business development managers who are in the service and solutions business. This audience is encompassing in that consultants will find a wealth of advice and knowledge on how to successfully execute and deliver within the context of the entire engagement cycle. The value this book brings to business systems analysts who work internally for a company is the approach that ensures a close working relationship with their customers. Business development managers will gain some deep insights about how to properly initiate an engagement after the business is won and ensure that what was promised during the sales cycle is actually delivered during the execution of the project or delivery of services.
The book starts with one of the most important topics to each audience member: contracting. I gained a lot from this section because, while I am a consultant, my services are "sold" by business development managers and I am not very close to the contract process. What I learned here will help me to help those who keep me busy to continue doing so. I have a newfound appreciation for what is involved in getting me placed on projects and assignments.
I thought the highlight of this book was the implementation strategy. If you are a consultant you know that this is probably the most critical step in the whole process because it sets the tone for how the rest of the project will go. The adage about first impressions could not hold more truth than in this aspect of consulting (internal or external), because this is where the rubber meets the road so to speak. The approach proposed by the author is not only sound, but refined and will ensure success if followed.
Another section I particularly liked is the discussion of ethics. This is an issue that looms in the background and is thoroughly interwoven into our existence as consultants. The problem is that we are faced with ethical decisions almost every day, and are sometimes tempted to cross into grey areas and use rationalization. The solution is to take to heart the author's guidelines and advice and always be conscious of the fact that successful consulting requires a strict, unwavering commitment to a strong code of ethics. Personally, this section was a wake-up call that filled me with resolve to place professional ethics above all else.
Overall this book provides clear guidelines for delivering customer value and crafting a close, mutually beneficial relationship with clients. The emphasis on close communications and client interactions within the framework of a strong implementation approach and ethical dealings makes this book a "must read" by the audience I cited above. I strongly recommend it and give it 5 stars.

Roadmap to consulting in the 21st century
By Amazon Customer
This book deserves to be among the TOP 10 of business books of 2001. If you work as a consultant and want to learn your customers how to fish (in stead of giving them fish), BUY this book! If you have consultants walking around in your organisation, make sure they apply these principles!
After reading this, you'll understand why re-engineering processes fail, why the balanced scorecard isn't "the" solution", why teaching people skills sometimes has no impact, why implementing SAP is so hard and why people in companies are very sceptic if you suggest any of these "popular" solutions. In fact, all these solutions share the same underlying principle: some knowledge and procedures need to be added to the company to "fix" problems. This notion is wrong! Overcoming resistance to change has to do with giving people a chance to participate.
When studying projects of famous consultants and big 5 consulting comapnies, I have often wondered: "Why did the implementation of this project fail?" My first personal lesson was that PEOPLE matter more than methodology and tools. (I have been writing about this for years...).
Next to this first learning, I knew that it's not the consultants that have to bring the solution, it's the persons IN the organisation. And I have been looking for years for solutions to this paradox (being a consultant, that is). SO: methodology IS important: if you use a methodology which will mine the knowledge of the company as a WHOLE, you are the enabler of the change. As a consultant, you do not have to bring the CONTENT, the knowledge of WHAT needs to be changed, but you have to GUIDE the change process, and bring knowledge to the organisation so that they can change themselves. This book is one of the few that will really help you understand which processes are needed for this (many of the 30+ people that helped to write this book have a proven track record in this area).
If you don't know how to put systemic thinking into practice (or you think it's just about designing a solution with the system in mind), and/or if you haven't heard about whole-scale change, apreciative inquiry or the engagement paradigm, this is a good place to start: you will literally discover a new way of consulting, one that lives up to the title of this book and might even really enable "flawless" implementation processes.
And if putting this book into practice isn't flawless: go to the last chapter: Peter Block added a "trouble-shooting guide" that helps you get trough 12 common roadblocks.
Make consulting flawless, learn how to make people share THEIR solution.

But things don't go according to plan. Their sneaky trip across the water is fraught with disaster when they end up with an annoying tag-along, Tracey, who fills their heads with terrifying ghost stories of the murdering hermit who lives on the other side of the lake. Easy enough to brush off, until their boat capsizes and they find themselves injured and stranded in his ghostly turf. As night sets in, the girls find themselves on the run from a series of unexplained creepies that can only mean one thing...the ghost man is alive. Annoying Company, Scary Lake Adventure and Running From A Madman . . .
By AvidReader923(@Hey, It Was Free!)
Mica and Lexy are at it again! Seriously those girls are too much for their own good. Where one goes the other follows and this time around the duo head into trouble that leads to more danger than they can handle. It's probably a good thing they have each other and some boyfriends who are there when the girls find themselves in more trouble than they can handle.

The girls are adjusting to life after their close encounter with the drug dealers in the bush. Both are settling into their new relationships, however while Lexy and Tom seem to be advancing a little more, Mica and Eli find they have to work on a few things. So due to Mica being a bit ticked off at Eli for working to much and forgetting about her, again, she decides to get Lexy and take off to explore the other side of the mysterious lake, which is surrounded by rumors and ghost stories. The two are joined on their excursion last minute by an annoying classmate Tracey, who can't keep her mouth shut or her opinions to herself. Now what should have been a simple trip around the lake turns into a crazy, dangerous, life in peril adventure that only Mica and Lexy can get into.

Overall, loved it! Mica and Lexy are really becoming my favorite book girls. Those two are just too funny, sometimes frustrating, but you love them, so you want to keep reading more and more about them. I seriously thinks it's cause I relate to both of them in different ways and see my BFFs in them too. Now, grant it, our antics and adventures never got so crazy, well a couple times maybe, but I think that's the fun part about Mica and Lexy, a reader gets to relive a bit of yourself in them and enjoy their lives all while safely reading about their adventure in your favorite reading spot. Can't wait to read more about these two.

Suspense, drama, thriller, mystery and a glimpse back to your teenage life
By Shy Unique
what I love with these series with Mica and Lexy was the fact that anyone of us can relate into them. Probably not so much as with the adventures they went through but the characters character, attitude, reactions... it's all so familiar because at one point of our lives we've been in the age Mica and Lexy has been, We've been the impulsive, a bit immature and over confident teen agers growing into adult that they currently are. And of course, who can forget that feeling of falling in love the first time? The first relationship we've been that we thought we know a lot at that age only to find out that we have a lot more to learn when it comes to relationship. Forbidden Waters bring all of those emotion back home as if it was a journey back in time. Or at least that was how it felt like for me.

The suspense and mystery is not so much as the first book but I assure you that like the first one it will have your imagination running wild. I was actually hoping for a bit more of paranormal stuff but that's just me asking for more. This book is already complete in essence as it is. Add another annoying character into the loop and you'll surely find yourself hooked and eager to find out how it went for them.

I love best the fact how it ends... not the love story part but the friendship part. The part where the old bond gets stronger and a new one is formed. It's heart touching and definitely brought a smile to my face.

Once again, Melissa Pearl brought me to a world so magnificent that I saw the beauty of literature collide with my own experience. And for that, I sincerely thank you for this wonderful novel.

Introduction to Heat Potential Theory (Mathematical Surveys and Monographs), by Neil A. Watson

This book is the first to be devoted entirely to the potential theory of the heat equation, and thus deals with time dependent potential theory. Its purpose is to give a logical, mathematically precise introduction to a subject where previously many proofs were not written in detail, due to their similarity with those of the potential theory of Laplace's equation. The approach to subtemperatures is a recent one, based on the Poisson integral representation of temperatures on a circular cylinder. Characterizations of subtemperatures in terms of heat balls and modified heat balls are proved, and thermal capacity is studied in detail. The generalized Dirichlet problem on arbitrary open sets is given a treatment that reflects its distinctive nature for an equation of parabolic type. Also included is some new material on caloric measure for arbitrary open sets. Each chapter concludes with bibliographical notes and open questions. The reader should have a good background in the calculus of functions of several variables, in the limiting processes and inequalities of analysis, in measure theory, and in general topology for Chapter 9.

I, Lobster: A Crustacean Odyssey, by Nancy Frazier

Consider the lobster. An improbable icon, Mesozoic revenant, surrealist fetish, nightmare ornament, and gastronomic adventure, it has fascinated people throughout history. It may be an exaggeration to say that lobsters are a cultural obsession—but only slightly. I, Lobster dissects the place of the lobster in human affairs, through history, science, myth, art, literature, music, movies, and, of course, cuisine. Though not generally beautiful to human eyes, lobsters star in some of the most gorgeous works of art in the world, the still-lifes painted in the Low Countries during the seventeenth century. And while many of us would question their sex appeal, lobsters carried an erotic charge for artists of the twentieth century who, inspired by Freud, found many opportunities to think of them in that way.

Nancy Frazier explores diverse facets of our fascination with the lobster, whether in art, myth, or science. She describes how the lobster lives in its natural surroundings: its food, sex life, social life, predators, and general behavior. But I, Lobster goes beyond what we think about and do to the lobster, to explore how lobsters speak to us as signs, symbols, metaphors, code words, myth, lore, and fantasy. With recipes drawn from such notable lobster connoisseurs as M. F. K. Fisher, Alice B. Toklas, and Craig Claiborne, I, Lobster is a quirky, charming, and weirdly fascinating compendium of lobster lore.

Review
“I, Lobster: A Crustacean Odyssey written by Nancy Frazier, is a newly published consideration of the lobster represented throughout history as anicon, subject of art, and delicacy, among other things. Frazier’s comprehensive exploration of lobster lore is fascinating, scholarly, and humorous—and, it’s prompted me to take pause to stop and gawk again.”—Cape Cod Magazine

“This is a quirky, amusing book that explores many diverse aspects of the ways that people think about, write about, portray, cook, and eat lobsters.”—Maine Antique Digest

“This work may be thought of as a thick description of the lobster; it serves as the focal point for Frazier’s wide-ranging observations about a variety of topics, with surprises and unexpected connections in every chapter. It is impossible to think that any fact, thought, feeling, or perception involving the clawed crustacean has been left out of this deftly written and at times whimsical study.” —Choice

“Author Nancy Frazier shifts gears well from erudite discussions of lobsters in art to films (Woody Allen’s ‘Annie Hall’ kitchen lobster escape) to science fiction, fantasy and horror literature (Stephen King’s ‘lobstrocities’) to the creatures’ behavior in the natural world. . . . The wide array of topics covered in each chapter never failed to surprise me.”—Providence Journal

About the Author

I Lobster...What a serving !
By L R Miller
After reading Nancy Frazier's tribute to the lobster, I will never look at a lobster on my plate in the same way again. Other than brief meetings in a restaurant, I had no interest in getting to know anyone in the Homarus genus (regardless of its species). Yet, the menu of topics in this book provides an array of everything one can possibly learn about lobsters which quickly evoked a fascination in me. Most fascinating is an appetite though history that humankind has held for the lobster in art, literature, folklore, cinema, and more.
I Lobster treats this creature as a starting point to packets of diverse information spreading into unanticipated regions of engaging facts from eras past to present (which testify to fathoms of research). Yet, it uses a template of philosophical observation which turns its attention to us - our symbolism, perceptions, and the projection of ourselves onto the lobster. As NF states, the central thesis of the book is..."that the lobster as we know it is a reflection of ourselves..." Hume would likely agree, that we "apply to external bodies every internal sensation which they occasion." Lobsters have always provoked a palatable swirl of sensations (ask Stephen King) which the author vividly describes with a colorful style effective as strokes from an artist's brush.
Beyond all that, this book is just plain fun to read.

The March of the Lobsters and More Delights
By Owl
What's not to love about a book introducing us to the march of the lobsters? The northern species migrates in winter to the ocean depths, in their usual loner, stay-away-from-me, unsociable style. The southern species, also usually unsociable, migrates in single file chains, the antennae of the one behind in constant contact with the tail-fan of the lobster ahead, thousands and thousands of lobsters in an enormous lobster chain, heading out. Who would have known?

"I, Lobster: A Crustacean Odyssey" delights, charms, informs, and amuses on every page. Many are the books on lobster biology, lobster cooking, lobsters-and-the-environment, honorably and carefully cited in "I, Lobster." What's new and (as far as I know) unique is the beginning, middle, and end viewpoints.

The book began with a term paper on lobsters in art: fine art, from the splendid Roman mosaics to the great artists of the Renaissance to contemporary artists, such as Joseph Cornell (gentle boxes of balletic lobsters) and Salvador Dali (not gentle at all). From fine art, Frazier turns to the other arts. There's a chapter on lobsters in science fiction across many centuries, including one nightmare-inducing book by Stephen King and another by Lucian (CE about 100).

There are 13 richly researched chapters: the cult of the lobster, celebrations seductions & crimes, natural history, life death & medical conditions, man-eating monsters, SF, the Palinurus problem, secrets of the seas, a metaphor for people, the bartender & the lobster, welcome to the lobster hotel, bouilabaisse, and lobster recipes. Each has five or so sections, like short stories within a general theme, cleverly titled, and written with enough detail to satisfy but not overwhelm. Cumulatively, the book examines lobsters and the human condition about which there is far more to be said than ever I imagined.

Frazier is so excellent a writer, though, she probably could make any topic a treasure-house of wit and wisdom. The closest writers to her might be E. B. White in his essays on his Maine salt-water farm and the admirable writers of "Lobscouse and Spotted Dog," that glorious book on recipes of dishes served in the Aubrey-Maturin series. To these on my book-shelf now will be added "I, Lobster."

So admirable a book by so gifted a writer could perhaps have a better title. Except for citing Lewis' "Tis the voice of the lobster, I heard him declare" the lobsters never speak in their own (imagined or otherwise) voices. Wisely, mystical extrapolations to their inner lives are avoided except for an appropriate setion on whether lobsters feel pain when they're boiled alive. Also---granted a minor wave in a vast ocean of enthusiasm, the cover photograph of a glistening lobster tail (uncooked, black) didn't seem as inspired and witty as the book itself.

At any rate, a book to give a friend curious of mind and encyclopedic of interests, a book to read aloud if you are lucky enough to participate in a lobster feast, and a book for reading again and again for your own great pleasure. With melted butter or not.

Thank you, Ms. Frazier!

Very unusual book!
By nmscott
Nancy Frazier is a fine writer, and it took one to amass all this disparate information about lobster through the ages, and then tame it into an organized whole. An original approach to a popular subject. I wish the illustrations would have been in color.

The Soul Fallacy: What Science Shows We Gain from Letting Go of Our Soul Beliefs, by Julien Musolino

Most Americans believe they possess an immaterial soul that will survive the death of the body. In sharp contrast, the current scientific consensus rejects the traditional soul, although this conclusion is rarely discussed publicly. In this book, a cognitive scientist breaks the taboo and explains why modern science leads to this controversial conclusion. In doing so, the book reveals the truly astonishing scope and power of scientific inquiry, drawing on ideas from biology, psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, and the physical sciences.

Much more than chronicling the demise of the traditional soul, the book explores where soul beliefs come from, why they are so widespread culturally and historically, how cognitive science offers a naturalistic alternative to religious conceptions of mind, and how postulating the existence of a soul amounts to making a scientific claim.

Although the new scientific view of personhood departs radically from traditional religious conceptions, the author shows that a coherent, meaningful, and sensitive appreciation of what it means to be human remains intact. He argues that we do not lose anything by letting go of our soul beliefs and that we even have something to gain.

Throughout, the book takes a passionate stand for science and reason. It also offers a timely rejoinder to recent claims that science supports the existence of the soul and the afterlife.

Review
"The bestseller list is crowded with books—some by naifs, others by charlatans—which announce that the existence of ghosts is a scientific fact and the key to a meaningful life. Thank goodness for The Soul Fallacy. With patience, good nature, and relentless rationality, Julien Musolino shows that we humans are a part of the natural world and subject to its comprehensible laws. Even better, he shows that this triumph over superstition and hocus-pocus is a cause for celebration, not despair."

—STEVEN PINKER, Johnstone Family Professor of Psychology, Harvard University, and author of How the Mind Works and The Blank Slate

“More than 60 percent of Americans believe that immortal souls exist. Despite the absence of any credible evidence, these twenty-first-century believers make the extraordinary claim that personalized phantoms contain the unique personality and memories of their temporary hosts. To the rescue comes The Soul Fallacy, Julien Musolino’s powerful, enjoyable, and well-researched book. This fresh, timely work exposes soul belief to be vacant and without form. Best of all, The Soul Fallacy is uplifting and inspirational. Musolino’s case for skepticism is constructive and positive. He shows that meaning and morality are within the reach of mere mortals and not dependent on soul belief. The Soul Fallacy does not attempt to force an unbearable view on people and cruelly rob them of a precious belief. It is, rather, an invaluable gift of science and reason designed to help them figure out such things on their own.”

—GUY P. HARRISON, author of Think: Why You Should Question Everything and 50 Simple Questions for Every Christian

“In the Middle Ages almost everyone believed in the witch theory of causality: that women cavorting with demons cause disease, disasters, accidents, crop failures, and assorted other maladies and calamities. Today no one in the Western world believes in witches because the witch theory of causality was replaced by scientific explanations for these assorted happenings. In The Soul Fallacy, Julien Musolino does for souls what earlier scientists did to witches: he explains why souls don’t exist, then shows that science offers a better explanation for the workings of the mind and other beliefs that souls supposedly explained, and finally offers a deeper, richer, and more fulfilling worldview grounded in science instead of superstition.”

—MICHAEL SHERMER, publisher ofSkepticmagazine, monthly columnist forScientific American, and author ofThe Believing BrainandThe Moral Arc

“A fascinating demonstration that souls, selves, inner essences—at least as they are traditionally conceived—are only compelling chimeras. In this vibrant book, Musolino offers a more scientific understanding of these common notions.”

—JOHN ALLEN PAULOS, professor of mathematics at Temple University, author ofInnumeracyandIrreligion

“The soul is hard to let go of. The Soul Fallacy convinces us that we should—and more importantly, it shows us that what we have gained is much more than what we have lost. A challenging, informative, and wonderfully readable book.”

—SEAN CARROLL, theoretical physicist at the California Institute of Technology, author of The Particle at the End of the Universe

“Know that you are a physical body with no soul; realize that self, free will, pain, and consciousness depend on your brain; and give up the delusion that there is something more, and—as Musolino brilliantly explains—you won’t find meaninglessness but freedom and truth.Musolino crushes the soul delusion with scientific evidence and meticulous argument. By the end of this wide-ranging book, the reader will surely know that individuals and whole societies can be freer, wiser, and more compassionate without it.”

—SUSAN BLACKMORE, visiting professor at the University of Plymouth, UK, author ofConsciousness: An Introduction and The Meme Machine

“Musolino’s book is the first scientific treatment of a great, fundamental question—do we have souls? That is, do we have something more than a body that includes a conscious brain? His book is a witty, accessible, and yet rigorous treatment of the scientific evidence against that persistent belief. Musolino does not eschew the difficult questions—if we have no souls, is there no hope? Is there no morality? Is there any sense of human purpose? His book demonstrates how progress in our understanding of the brain and of human evolution can help us discard unnecessary and misleading beliefs and lead us toward a more enlightened view of human nature.”

—PASCAL BOYER, Henry Luce Professor of Individual and Collective Memory, Washington University in St. Louis, author of Religion Explained

"Soul" Good!

The Soul Fallacy: What Science Shows We Gain From Letting Go of Our Soul Beliefs by Julien Musolino

"The Soul Fallacy" is a fantastic look at the immortal soul as a scientific hypothesis. Cognitive scientist and professor at Rutgers University, Julien Musolino takes the reader on an enlightening journey of the soul. With mastery of the subject and ease of explanation Musolino dissects this fascinating topic from multiple angles and reaches a sound and satisfactory conclusion. This excellent 287-page book includes the following nine chapters: 1. Lifting the Veil Chapter, 2. The Spirit of the Age, 3.The First Principle, 4. Dualism on Trial, 5. Requiem for the Soul, 6. La Mettrie's Revenge, 7. Descartes's Shadow, 8. The Sum of All Fears, and 9. Imagine.

Positives:
1. A well-written, well-researched book that is a treat to read.
2. An excellent topic: soul as a scientific hypothesis.
3. Musolino has a great command of the topic. His writing style is clear and intelligible. His tone is respectful, his approach is sound and he has conviction behind his words.
4. Book's format is logical and easy to follow. Each chapter builds from the previous as the author masterly builds his case for the nonexistence of the soul.
5. Makes great use of the current scientific consensus of subject matter experts to build his strong case. I love how the author also doesn't shy away from debunking the strongest arguments from apologists like D'Souza.
6. The book revolves around four conclusions: a. The soul can be treated as a scientific hypothesis, b. there is no credible evidence supporting the existence of the soul, c. modern science gives us every reason to believe that people do not have souls, and d. we do not lose anything morally by giving up soul beliefs.
7. Provides an excellent tour of history, philosophy and science to show that the soul is a figment of our imagination. "Scientists have abandoned the soul because reason and evidence--the tools of their trade--compelled them to do so."
8. Does a great job of explaining the traditional notion of the soul. "History teaches us that soul beliefs are timeless, close to universal, and that they have been associated with the phenomena of life, mind, and death. Along the way, we will discover that the soul began its life as a plurality of entities that have undergone important transformations in the course of history to give rise to the kind of soul that most people are familiar with today."
9. Makes great use of polls to help gage where the belief in souls currently stand and what they believe in. "According to a 2009 Harris poll, 71 percent of Americans believe in the survival of the soul after death. Harris ran a follow up in 2013 and found that a solid majority of Americans, 64 percent, continue to believe in the immortality of the soul."
10. Differentiates dualism from the materialistic hypothesis. "In sharp contrast, dualism is defined negatively. When dualists tell us that the soul is nonphysical or immaterial, they do not tell us what it is, they tell us what it is not."
11. Explains ways how scientists evaluate evidence. "In English, the word evidence is often used with different meanings in ordinary parlance and in scientific discourse. All decisive evidence is evidence, but not everything that people call evidence counts as decisive evidence. And if we want to avoid fooling ourselves, decisive evidence is what we need to learn to recognize."
12. Provides many interesting examples of soul advocates pushing their dualistic beliefs. Examines four families of soul claims: a. introspection, b. near-death experiences, c. appeal to recalcitrant phenomena like free will and consciousness, and d. attempts to argue that modern physics can be interpreted as lending support to the soul hypothesis. Great stuff!
13. The concept of a soul in a nutshell. "There is no scientifically credible evidence for the detachability of body and mind... Worse, the concept of an immaterial soul substance has no useful formulation, if it even has a coherent one, and it is therefore utterly devoid of any explanatory power."
14. Some statements are resounding. "If the term soul is simply a name that we give to our ignorance, it is no wonder that dualism still hasn't gotten off the ground as an explanatory framework more than two thousand years after it was proposed by philosophers like Plato." "What they really want to say is that the mind is separate from the body and can operate independently from it. This is what we called the detachability of mind and body. But calling the mind immaterial because it is an abstraction is not the same as showing that it can operate independently from the body. In the end, this last option also leads to an impasse for the dualist because it reduces the mental to the physical."
15. In defense of materialism. "The materialistic alternative to these soul claims is that our moral sense is the result of biological evolution, and that, like every other human capacity, it has a physical basis in the brain."
16. The hard problem, consciousness...discussed. "In asserting that consciousness is independent from matter, Dinesh D'Souza, like Will Ferrell in his parody of George W. Bush, is asking us to believe that facts are neither real nor relevant. We may not know how consciousness arises from neural computation, but there is little doubt that consciousness is intimately related to what goes on in the brain."
17. Exposes the science deniers. "In 1999, these sentiments were expressed in a controversial manifesto that surfaced on the Internet. According to the Wedge Document, issued by the Discovery Institute, the goal of a new generation of cultural warriors in America was to "defeat scientific materialism and its destructive moral, cultural and political legacies" and "to replace materialistic explanations with the theistic understanding that nature and human beings are created by God."
18. The problem of free will.
19. Provides meaning in life through scientific materialism.
20. Debunks the notion that societies need "God" to flourish. "In sum, the claim that strong theistic beliefs lead to healthier societies is not supported by the data."
21. Well-cited book, and formal bibliography.

Negatives:
1. There is some redundancy. The author does take glee in obliterating D'Souza...oh who am I kidding? I enjoyed that immensely.
2. What took him so long to write this book?

In summary, I loved this book. It's a treat to read a well-written book that covers a fascinating topic by asking the right questions (philosophy) and by providing the best answers (science) and does so to my satisfaction (logical conclusions). Musolino objectively dismantles the soul hypothesis by making reference to great science, sound reasoning and compelling storytelling. The book is immersed with anecdotes, references to great books and reaches sound conclusions. A hidden gem, a high recommendation!

Thought provoking and insightful
By dragon lady
Thoughtfully written and researched, this controversial book demonstrates why our persistent belief in the existence of souls is not only wrong but potentially damaging to society. Drawing extensively on the work of other authors doesn’t mean Musolino is afraid to put froth his own insights gained from a lifetime of careful observation and study. Musolino raises four main points starting with how proving or disproving the existence of souls is an objective endeavor and therefore subject to examination using scientific principle. Secondly, there is no sound credible evidence for the existence of souls, thirdly, science provides ample reasons for disbelieving such claims and fourth, we have nothing to lose and plenty to gain by giving up this persistent if erroneous belief.

While on the surface of things, this topic is one that would cause most readers with strong religious beliefs a great deal of discomfort, Musolino is generally most respectful though there are a few infamous televangelists he enjoys ripping on. Although Musolino has a strong scientific background, he does not talk down to his readers yet lays out his arguments in a logical, easy to follow manner that holds ones interest. Thought provoking and likely unpopular among the religious community, this should be read by anyone with the curiosity and willingness to challenge or confront their beliefs.

An excellent read!
By Dr. Paul Sommer
An excellent read!! An outstanding review of the arguments that put to rest the dualistic notions of an immaterial supernatural soul. Highly recommended. A thoroughly readable book for religious and non-religious alike. As an avid brain science reader, this is one of the best in a while. Can't wait for future books.
