Grade 10 Up—The 800-plus entries in this well-rounded volume cover the period from 1792 to 1815 and describe Napoleon's and France's lasting impact on the world. They range from expected topics like "Infantry"; "Madrid Uprising"; "Nelson, Horatio, First Viscount"; and "Quadruple Alliance" to material on authors, artists, composers, places, "Education (French)," "Luddites," "Neoclassicism," and "Slave Trade." The books include black-and-white maps and illustrations, glossaries of military and naval terms, 10 essays that summarize the entire period, and 18 primary-source documents. The set is well organized and easy to use; tables of contents and indexes appear in each volume, and each signed entry includes extensive see-also references and suggestions for further reading. A 44-page bibliography, unfortunately not divided by topic, completes the set. A number of dates in the chronology contradict those in the main text. For example, the chronology states that the siege of Pamplona began on June 30, 1813, whereas the entry says it began on June 25th of the same year. Still, this will be a valuable addition to the European history collections in large public libraries. The focus of this set is the years from 1792 to 1815, and as the subtitle implies, it covers the far-reaching effects and consequences of the Napoleonic era. There are more than 800 alphabetically arranged entries focusing on prominent figures, noteworthy battles, and political and social change. A detailed chronology begins the set, starting with the death of Holy Roman Emperor Leopold II and ending with the Second Treaty of Paris. Since military maneuvers are such an important part of the Napoleonic era, a helpful glossary of both military and naval terms is also included. Primary sources often conflict on the statistical information related to a given battle (soldiers involved, the killed and wounded, etc.), so entries rely on various sources from all over the world and in multiple languages. These sources are cited in the extensive further-reading lists placed at the end of each entry, after the generous list of see also references. A broad topic like Austrian army has 11 see also references and no less than 20 sources listed at its conclusion.

Ten "contextual essays," each approximately four to six pages in length, cover military operations, political ideology, literature, science, economy, and imperial expansion. Sixty-five helpful black-and-white maps are sprinkled throughout the volumes, some of them clearly delineating the expansion and contraction of the Napoleonic Empire. Most of the maps, however, are detailed depictions of battles, complete with terrain features, army formations, and troop placement and movement. Even important sea battles are not ignored, including ship movement and wind direction. Additional illustrations depict battles, while still others show important congresses, treaties, and personages.

A chronology and the glossaries of military and naval terms are repeated in each volume, as is the detailed index. Volume 3 contains a bibliography and 18 primary source documents.

Overall, this is a fantastic resource for anyone researching the period. It is straightforward and user-friendly enough to be helpful to the beginner, but the detail and extensive references will appeal to the more advanced and experienced researcher as well. Experience a New Freedom in Your Relationships with Men

"When a man does not feel good about himself, he will become less loving to you." ~ Barbara De Angelis

Barbara De Angelis is obviously an expert on male-female relationships and as I read all her books I realize how much she has gone through to write such helpful guides. She bases her ideas on surveys and personal experience.

The start of this book is mostly about changing yourself so you become more confident, stop mothering your man and stop nagging constantly. By irritating your man less you get a better relationship instantly. Then you can work on deeper levels of communication because your guy will actually be more interested in talking to you. Barbara De Angelis gives very good advice in this area too. She especially advises you to tell a man what you like to talk about and then stick to a plan. Basically leave the aimless conversations for when you are with your female friends or with a man who has a large corpus callosum. I personally find it more easy to talk to a man who is artistic.

This book has some good tips on how not to rescue men and how to allow them to grow and evolve because they want to, not because you force them to. Barbara talks about how you should get your own life and seek support amongst female friends. As she says: "Men will never be women."

Some of the surprising things in this book include the topic about reasons men want to have sex. You should also avoid asking a man what is wrong and asking a man how you look - especially if you want details.

Barbara DeAngelis did men a favor when she wrote this book almost twenty years ago. This is an excellent pep talk for women who are fed up in their relationships. It gives women the power to change their relationships for the better all while allowing men to be men. This is not a book about changing men but rather a book that seeks to explain why men react the way they do. By making slight adjustments women can gain the love they need and deserve.

Reading this book made me appreciate my husband more. I especially liked her advice on being straightforward with men. She suggests that when you are feeling upset you tell your man exactly what you want from him at that time. This saves hours of wasted time and gets you a faster result, especially if you want to avoid fights. Barbara DeAngelis encourages women not to think of men as mind readers.

For the most part this book seems to be quite accurate so the only problem I had was that some of the solutions didn't take temperaments into consideration. A more outgoing partner may find it easier to plan events or take charge in various ways. This book does tell some secrets about men but it also explains how women act and react in relationships. I thought the section on sexuality was enlightening and men will love the advice when it is put into action.

I have begun reading this book. Hoping to better understand my husband and improve my love for him. So far, I have seen her samples in other's I have known, but little applies to my husband and I. We have not had multiple relationships with others outside of our marriage and I'm not sure how helpful her findings will work for us. I'll have to let you know when I finish the book.

The elixir of creation straight from an original artist and genuine badass

There are many *good* books out there which do a fine job of teaching you something new. There are *great* books that compel you to change your behavior, or take up a new hobby. And then there are *extraordinary* books which can potentially change the course of your life. This is such a book.

Werner Herzog is an original. As a youngster, he taught himself how to make films. When no one would fund his movie-making habit, he started his own production company at age 17. When he needed to get through the Peruvian jungle for filming "Fitzcarraldo", he forged official-looking documents for safe passage (they worked). For every film, he did a thousand things to get the shot. He once won a poetry contest four times by entering under five different names, and directed major operas when he couldn't read music.

Reading the book, I came to have deep respect for his unstoppability and uncompromising vision. There is a certain methodical madness that should inspire all of us to roll up our sleeves, listen to that inner voice of creativity, and just do what needs to get done. It also compels the reader to look beyond the strictures of university degrees, schools of thought and ossified convention to forge one's own idiom. It's an incredibly powerful, freeing notion for any artist, exemplified by this passage:
"While at work on this book, Werner explained he wanted something done a particular way. I suggested to him that 'the publisher doesn't usually do that.' He absorbed what I told him, paused, then said softly, 'I'm not interested in how things are usually done. I want it done this way.'"

Any one of Herzog's stories would be enough fodder to establish an average person's badass status for life: the making of "Aguirre" in the implacable jungle; filming a scene for "Fitzcarraldo" of a steamship going up a steep mountain in the Amazon by actually pulling a steamship up a mountainside in the Amazon; having near-death experiences in Africa, Southeast Asia, South America, and Kuwait on a daily basis; filming in Antarctica, Andean peaks, or prehistoric caves sealed for 32,000 years; and craziest of all, working with the madman Klaus Kinski on five different films. But Herzog has made 60+ movies, half of which probably endangered his life, making him a permanent member of the Badass Hall of Fame.

The author Paul Cronin does an excellent job with his unobtrusive, lucidly thorough style. Even though the book weighs in at 500+ pages, the stories are gripping enough to make it a quick read. I particularly appreciated the unforgettable characters in the stories: Fini Straubinger, one of the blind and deaf subjects of "Land of Silence and Darkness"; Philippe Petit the tightrope walker; Dieter Dengler the decorated pilot and POW; cannibal dictator Jean-B�del Bokassa of the Central African Republic; Bruno S; Gesualdo, the brilliant, eccentric and homicidal composer; Walter Steiner the woodcarver/champion ski jumper.

Whether you've wanted to build a garden shed or write an epic novel, we all have an inner creator that may not have yet expressed itself fully. This book is the key to freeing that creator, filling its belly with gunpowder and setting its butt on fire. If you find me making films some time in the near future, you'll know what got me started. Herzog on Herzog - the Rematch

If you are hoping to gain some deep insight into the process by which famous directors plan their storyboards and ensure that they have adequate coverage of their angles from this book, save your money and buy a different one.

If you want to discover more about Herzog's private life, you should look elsewhere.

If though, like me, you are captivated by the power of Herzog's films, the poetry of his landscapes, the direct and fearless assault he makes on subjects as diverse as the aftermath of the Gulf War, Sky-Fliers, Death Row, the McMurdo research station, and want to know a more about his ideas and his work, then this book is invaluable.

This book is an expanded and revised version of Cronin's earlier "Herzog on Herzog" (Faber & Faber, 2003). It consists of a series of interviews between Cronin and Herzog, edited by them both, that took place over the 10 years to 2012. Cronin prompts; Herzog explains, elucidates, reformulates, expounds, recaps and explains again.

Herzog's philosophy is clearly stated throughout. Simply put, he believes that real life is everything, and it is through intimate and committed contact with real life that we discover true understanding and meaning.

The quote from its pages that brought me to this book was: "The best advice I can offer to those heading into the world of film is not to wait for the system to finance your projects and for others to decide your fate. If you can't afford to make a million-dollar film, raise $10,000 and produce it yourself. That's all you need to make a feature film these days. Beware of useless, bottom-rung secretarial jobs in film-production companies. Instead, so long as you are able-bodied, head out to where the real world is. Roll up your sleeves and work as a bouncer in a sex club or a warden in a lunatic asylum or a machine operator in a slaughterhouse. Drive a taxi for six months and you'll have enough money to make a film. Walk on foot, learn languages and a craft or trade that has nothing to do with cinema."

There is a vast amount of fascinating material in this book about the adventures he endured making his films, but what left the most indelible impression on me was rather the strength of his passion for all the incredible situations and people that he has noticed over the years. Situations and people from the real world that a thousand others could have noticed, but didn't. Situations and people for which he had the vision and perseverance to capture on film and to transform with his unique insight and provide us with understanding and meaning through his films.

An essential book for anyone who lives, or wishes to live, in the real world.

Excellent with one reservation

This was a fascinating and inspiring read for me, although I have one reservation which I'll save for last. I loved hearing about how Herzog had come to start his own production company, and how he had managed to keep it afloat over the years. I also really enjoyed the technical discussions behind each film, even though many of them I have never seen. Herzog's blue-collar approach to all aspects of filmmaking seems correct to me -- the filmmaker must be the engine of the production, even if that involves performing surgery on a crew member in the jungle.

My one reservation is that, as an aspiring filmmaker myself, I felt that looking at Herzog too closely might restrict me from learning my own production process. As much as I admire his process, it is uniquely his and simply staring at it does not transfer any of his abilities or sensibilities to me. In fact it would be hard to imagine Werner himself reading such a book as this. It's a Yoda-like situation, the difference between thinking (reading) and doing. I also find Werner's Rogue film school to be contradictory in that respect -- can one attend this school and still be considered a rogue of any sort?

Finally I will say that after reading this one can wonder if Werner is simply playing a part now, the role of the eccentric filmmaker. I suspect there is a little of that but mostly I think he is genuine. With that in mind I highly recommend this book.

I pretty much read Hackett quite a bit

I have a BA in Philosophy. I pretty much read Hackett quite a bit. They do really well with their survey style books. I think they give one a good feel for what the topic is.

Very good introductory material.

This book, used as a companion in an Analytic Philosophy class at Pacific Lutheran University, provides a broad introduction to primary sources in Analytic Philosophy, beginning with the early Analysts (Russell, Moore, Broad) and moving into material on Logical Positivsm and then Linguistic Analysis. A very good introduction for anyone interested in Analytic Philosophy.
